The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Was out in the yard working this morn. I took a few pics after I put some leaves in the coop. They loved it

Girls around the water cooler. These are large girls. That waterer is a five gallon sitting on a 3 inch block. it is hard to capture size in a photo.

Joy here is my black pullet out of Winston. she is a favorite of mine. All my blacks are still young. If the yr olds dont' hurry and get through their molts and start laying I don't know when I am going to hatch any.

Shame on you Bama.... for showing us all them purdy chickens... lol It sure is hard to show size in a pictures..... for sure... but WOW are they lovely...... and that black girl you got from Joy.. has the most pleasing face... She reminds me of Elizabeth Taylor... lol

So I sit and look at your chooks and I look at mine - and mine don't look like that. Don't get me wrong, I love my little hens, but they don't look anything like that.
I had seen orpington pix online and began to dream about them...literally. So of course when my local feed store got chicks in, I bought them. I am the proud mama of ten Buff Orpingtons. It makes me feel guilty that I am unhappy that they didn't grow up to look like the lovelies you have here. So what's a girl to do? I give these little ladies to "good homes" and try to purchase some of the yard candy you have pictured??? Or I remind myself that my little gals have the sweetest personalities I could have imagined and I get over the differences between "what I thought I was getting" and "what I got"? And if I do decide to upgrade - how do I go about finding hens that look like that?

I don't know anyone that has English or even English type Buff Orpingtons in the USA. If you have never had chickens before.. then let me please suggest you raise out what you have for right now... Come spring you can make a more informed decision... plus if you decide to sell off what you have.... at least you will get more for them.

Good Luck,
renie

Hi,
All is not lost, by the time you order some eye candy and grow them out your girls (how old are they) could be used as broodies or freezer camp.

Julie - The pictures look great. I see quite a few fluffy butts in there that I would love to have !! And your black girl from me looks awesome !! I love her face - very elegant. How old is she in that picture? I can't remember which batch of eggs she hatched out from?

Rahtbone - I'm with Renie, I don't know anybody in the US with English buffs or even English-type buffs. I sure would love to have some, though !! Also agree with Kassandra - the difference between hatchery birds and breeder birds is night and day. How old are your girls? Remember, that looks isn't the only important thing - sweet girls are important too !!
