The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

On a lighter note; Had some chicks hatch overnight from Three Ravens line (courtesy of a pair I got from Roger) as well as some I picked up from someone else who had blacks from the Three Ravens line. Anyway, the eggs I was shipped were all normal sized for the black chicks, but 2. Two of the eggs in the dozen were giant sized (I joked that they were pterodactyl eggs). The only two that hatched were the huge eggs which resulted in huge chicks. Empress (or Emperor) and Pudge weighed in at 1.8 and 1.7 oz at 12 hrs old. The blues/splashed I've hatched two weeks ago and today average at about 1.2 - 1.4 oz.

All three together.

So what do most people average on weight with chicks? I've only recently started weighing chicks to see if there is any correlation between hatch weight and adult size to see if this will help to be able to downsize at a younger age...right now I'm keeping most of my chicks until they are at least 6 months old.
Sylvia I hope you will keep me up on the weight thing and let me know how it turns out. I am very interested in the weight of the black chicks I have a few chicks I am going to weigh Tomorrow. They are 3 weeks old and didn't start off extra large but have grown so much since hatch. I picked on up a day or two ago and thought it felt very heavy. I would love to cull earlier too.
I need to take some recent pics of the hatch mates to the boy you got. They are just beautiful. If the oldest male I kept keeps gets the growth on I want in the next two months I will be showing him. His type is fantastic

Okay I just weighed a 7day old and weighs 2.1 oz. Just weighed a two week old and weighs 7.5 oz. I will weighed the 3 week olds tomorrow. They were sleeping when I went out.

We've had like 8 inches of rain in the last two days and If we finally get any sun tomorrow, I'll get out there and take some pictures of him too. I'm worried about his comb, but he's got nice lacing and type.

I really trying to develop a spread sheet like data keeper to help me organize the information on bloodlines, and their progeny; crosses and results. I may have to keep a jump drive for each bloodline (rooster) so I can keep data and chronicle pictures, etc. Does anyone go this in depth with keeping track of information? Any tried and true methods? I have so many folders and composition books around, it's driving me crazy!

I went out and weighed a two week old he weighs 7.5 oz and I weighed a 7 day old it weight 2.1 oz. I will weigh the three week olds tomorrow and take pics.
It has rained here for several days. Hoping for a dry day tomorrow. I need to move chicks to a ground pen.
Sylvia you cull that boy if he won't work for you.

Here is the hatch mate to your boy and he doesn't look as large but more coby with a shorter back and lots of fluff. He may get to be shown if he keeps looking good. Turned 6 months on May 1

All from the same cross of a Black Cock over Splash hen and with varying results of color and type. I may need to cross this pair again in the fall. Here is a back side view of his tail and width

You can see the other cockerel I kept. shaped a bit different and the verdict is still out as to whether he will be staying. I am giving him another rmonth ot see if his tail looks better.

The girls are beautiful!!! The cockerel should be wearing a wide load sign across the rear! Yes, he is a little shorter backed than the one I took home, and the tail feathers seem lighter. Gorgeous, gorgeous cross. I hope you do try it again!
