The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I'm new to English orps. This chocolate LF baby is 4.5 weeks old. Talk about slooooooow development! Can any of you more experienced English orp parents give advice? Is this normal? This little one is like a giant day old chick! Is this baby leaning towards pullet or cockerel? Thanks!

He is kind of slow. As a general rule they are feathered out by the time they are 6 weeks old.

He is just an exception to the rule. Unless he is a featherless bird he will just be a late bloomer

I think she is beautiful! I am going to do Isabelle/Crele. I am tempted also to do Silver Laced Chocolate. I saw one on a British website and WOW gorgeous. We have 100% English Silver Laced and we have 100% English Chocolate lines on this side of the pond. It would be a fun second project I think. Anyone know which would be better, covering Silver laced hens with a Choc Roo or the other way around? Any good genetic guys out there want to step up?
This si definitely the direction I am headed too. I love both the colors, but I really love my chocolates. Silver laced chocolates seem doable along with my lemon laced and mauves!

I saw the silver laced chocolates on Keith orps and fell in love!

Ha Ha, that is where I saw them too. He has some gorgeous silver laced chocolates. He also had Isabelle laced (lavender/gold laced) I found them less exciting than the standard Isabelle. That is one color that isn't tempting. I envy you your Mauve. I LOVE Mauve. I am interested in trying to carry the silver laced choc into silver laced mauve. All one step at a time. Can I ask you a question? Being Mauve is from the "blue" dilute gene working on Choc, do you get the same variety? Some choc, some mauve, some mauve/choc splash? Is Mauve as unstable as Blue?

I'm still trying! Using diluted recessive genes is dicey. My blue roo just up and died so I am in the process of growing out a new one. I would like to make laced everything! I just love it. But too many projects at once is just too hard.

I am with you on that issue. I want to keep myself focused. Plus I don't want to get overwhelmed by "chicken math!" Which is the reason the Isabelle/Crele come first, the silver laced choc will come second. Once that gets rolling I will maybe toss the "Blue" Gene into that mix. Needless to say, I will have beautiful chickens. I am only keeping 2 flocks. I do like blue, choc and mauve, so the 2nd flock will hopefully be a happy mix eventually of all 3. With the dilute gene being the way it is, there will always be a mix in that flock. The beauty of my 1st project, is being able to keep a mixed flock of Crele and Isabelle, since they are basically the same except the Isabelle carry the lavender gene. Only thing about the Crele roosters that I may sell or pass on is being sure to mention that they are split for lavender. Just in case they might not want Isabelle chicks popping out of the woodwork lol.
