The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

A "split" is not a mix of two different countries blood into one bird, a split (in my mind) is a bird that carries a gene for something (ie: lavender or cuckoo) but doesn't express it.

Perhaps I used the word Split too loosely.. But my intentions were to point out.. that my birds are not 100% English blood lines and I always make sure anyone that buys birds or hatching eggs from me knows that from the get go. I would never try to deceive anyone. Not that anyone here is saying differently... just pointing that out is all.

Ok Jeremy.. where are those pictures??? lol

Regardless of what blood or how much of that blood the bird carries ALL LF (large fowl) orpingtons are in the ENGLISH catagory at a show. ALL Bantam orps are in SCCL bantam catagory (single comb clean legged).

Oh that is soo interesting to know.. thank you so much for sharing that info.

and I have seen others enter birds into that English class with Orpingtons that have English blood in them, Cochin bred into the line, Langshan, etc. Even though they are not full American type by the SOP (Standard of Perfection) they have wiped the floor with my birds that were 100% American Orpingtons.

English type are beautiful and they birds that won over mine where/are beautiful. I just wanted to point out that breeders/exhibitors do introduce other things into their lines to improve/change type all the time.

What you are referring to when you are saying split is what I say is part something like one would say when they are working on a project, etc.

When ever I sell chicks or eggs I tell the person they are a American-English blend Orps. I think that says it all, I dont think they are a split.

Ok Jeremy.. where are those pictures??? lol

I probably won't have anything up until this evening Renie... I'm working a long, unbearable day away from home. It's killing me knowing those little ones are there in the brooder without me hovering over them!

Here's another question for show people out there. Do you keep your show chickens in individual pens/cages all the time or do you let them out to wander around? We usually let our layers out about an hr or so before dark to scratch around the yard. She was told not to let show chickens out.
