The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I think they fair better in a colder climate than I live in. I think they may actually grow off larger. I like to hatch and raise them out in the colder months if possible. I may hatch a few in Jan. if i get any eggs.

Kathy - you have some really NICE black pullets - that picture of the black pullet in your first set of pictures (I think the 2nd picture) is just gorgeous - the splash isn't nothing to sneeze at either. Great job !!!

Roger - WOW - that black girl is stunning !! I just might show up on your doorstop one day here soon (tomorrow) and bring her home with me. Took us a while to get you a black, but she is definitely worth waiting for !!!

Julie, I've heard the same thing - that if you hatch and grow them out in the winter, they are bigger. Not sure if this is true or not. Just might have to give that theory a shot and see what happens.

Joy - I am going to say something here and people are going to think I am crazy............but I look at the Almanac and read the signs of the moon when I set eggs. There are period that you set and the chick will grow faster - but lack quality..... other times the chick will grow slower and will have higher quality. This is something that my grandpa mentioned (among other tricks) that I have tend to follow. Does it work? Well - I think there is a difference and can tell it.

My grandpa use to always tell me about northern wind and how the direction of the northern wind effect your offspring... but this is only if you leave the eggs under the hen. There are also other signs that tell you when to plant and harvest........

.. This coming from 4 generations of farming on the same land.

Ok.... back to work now..... no more gypsy tells.... LOL

So far I have only ever received or hatched these birds towards the end of the year, I do think that because they get to grow longer before the weather gets bad again they do continue to develop and end up maturing bigger than if I were to hatch eggs, say in the summer.

It makes sense to me!

Hey Richard,

Believe it or not, but I don't think you are one bit crazy !! I do a lot of stuff by the cycles of the moon - planting, harvesting, weeding, etc. I believe the moon cycles have a large role in a lot of things that most people don't give a thought to, but I'm all about the Earth's energy, moon cycles, nature, etc. So, now people will think that BOTH of us are crazy. LOL. But what I want to know, is when in the moon cycle is it best to set eggs? I will definitely give it a try next time I hatch. Feel free to send any info PM or e-mail - would welcome the information.

And speaking for myself, I love Gypsy tales !!! LOL

Thanks Roger for such nice compliments. I'm just really happy that you are happy with them.

Hi Joy -

When I get home I will get the spreadsheet out of the brooder house and email to you.

For anyone who thinks we are crazy.........................try digging a hole when there is not a full moon and watch and see how much dirt you will be missing when you attempt to fill it back up.... then do the same on a full moon and you will have more than enough dirt to fill up the hole.

Richard
