The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Making Tolbunt Orps would be pretty easy actually, just cross a Gold Laced male over Mottled females. On GF's blog they mention using Jubilees... I'm wondering if they're opting to do this because they don't have access to Mottled birds or if they are hoping to deepen the base color of the future Tolbunts using the Mahogany influence from the Jubes.

The resulting chicks would all be partially laced, split to (recessivly carrying) the gene for mottling. You'd then cross the offspring together to end up with a percentage of chicks pure for the Mottling gene, having a 1 copy from each parent allowing them to physically express the color, a.k.a show their spots. From that point on it's just about refining and breeding for better and better gold lacing in the birds. Outcrossing to pure Gold Laced Orps would be one way to do this, but then you would have to work on bringing the Mottling gene back again.

In a nutshell, it's going to be a looooong project but the resulting birds will be gorgeous!

check out this latest blog from Greenfire.... boy do I love SPOTTED chickens!!

ok, I have to laugh. I had contacted Greenfire in April of 2011 and expressed my interest in undertaking a "tolbunt orpington" project(exact words) and really wanted to purchase some gold laced and jubillee orp chicks(went back to check my emails). They were only selling juveniles and didn't have any available until much later in the year.............it has the potential to be a wonderful project if the work is put in....
......was just wondering why it felt like deja vu when I opened that page

I bet you could do it better and get it done faster ;)

I never said I could do better, and definitely not faster(not set up to breed year-round), just thought it was funny....

can't even try until I get a hold of some gold laced orp beauties...just started my breeding pens in the tolbunt polish..
patience is definitely key since it is hard to get your hands on the right "ingredients"
it is just a pattern I find very intriguing, my favorite, my next favorite is crele

(already trying to figure out how to use my golden cuckoo clean legged marans hen(although she looks to be incomplete which would pose many problems) in a project without dh killing me)

My only advantage to breeding anything is my ability to distinguish complete and incomplete genes in some strains/patterns. I have an extremely analytical eye and tend to pick up on things that many don't see(useful in breeding anything, regardless of species). I am a scientist and math geek at heart, ask me to write you a poem or state a historic fact and I will fail.

I will again try to purchase some gold laced orps from greenfire this year, hopefully they will have them available. Ideally I would use an unrelated line than the ones they imported to diversify the genes(since my jubilee came from them) but I wasn't sure if anyone else has imported them?

You cant entirely make Crele from Golden Cuckoo Marans, Golden Cuckoo Marans is Barred Black Copper, where Crele is Barred BBR or Partridge. Marc might have imported some GL but im not sure, I know he has Blue Laced.

That's what I was thinking, you would need to introduce one of those two colors somewhere down the road, otherwise you'll never have a bird that breeds true. At least that's what I think. Because all Crele is is Barred BBR or Barred Partridge.

I feel like we've had this conversation before?

I figured that, was just going to start with the barred(cuckoo) and go from there, hadn't thought it out much past that. Was just taking skin color and type into consideration... I wish I was rich and had many, many acres at my disposal....I could get into huge trouble with dh then
