The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

there were horror stories at nationals one year about people loosing entire flock to a very contagious disease and guess what..it was from vaccine..when people gave the vaccine, it was live vaccine, the birds became carriers of that disease..i still have the article , i will get it out in the morning..cant remember the disease name off the top but it wasnt merecks..it was severe upper resp ..there are pros and cons..certian breeds carry a b factor in their blood and are naturally immune to mereks..most mediteranian birds have it.. most australorps seemed to be maybe because of some leghorn added way back..we lost an entire flock of dominiques to mereks years ago..it wiped them out..it was terrible..not one australorp got it..that was when our vet told me about natural immunity some birds have..seem sebrights , silkis, dominiques and some others are highly suseptible..some are impervious..some of the upper resp scares me..it can render your cockerals infertile..and it can travel in by wild bird if farms nearby have infected flock ..i used to vaccinate..but dont anymore..i guess if you want too keep suseptible birds then some vaccines might be worth it..

I believe it was MG. In the past the entire flock would have to have been vaccinated for it or they could become infected. However there is a new MG vaccine that can be given without worry of infecting non-vaccinated birds.
Good idea to always use caution when using any vaccine especially a live vaccine.

It was probably ILT, the only ILT vaccine that should be used by backyard and show breeders is the Schering Plough LT-IVAX. All the other brands spread bird to bird.

I wasn't aware that that was the case with the LARYNGO vaccines as well. Thanks for the info.

Our state tester suggested LARYNGO (because he shows) but never mention one over the other? Worth checking into.

Anyone here sell chicks and ship. I have had 3 shipments of eggs (assorted breeds and breeders) and of all 3 only 1 egg hatched. I had a 90% hatch rate from my eggs so not a bator problem. Guessing its a PO thing. My daughter is looking for SQ Black or Blue LF English birds for 4-h birds
