The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I just wanted to make a suggestion on the new babies. I would ask your breeder if he vaccinates for Marek's (probably not what they died from as they were too young) or Coccidia. I vaccinate for both and on the more fragile breeds or more susceptible breeds in general (imports in particular) it is a life saver but must be done at a day old. The vaccine is CoccivacD (new one is coming out in September CoccivacD2).
Good Luck,
Nellie
I too vaccinate all my chicks for Mareks... It is my opinion.. that more people are keeping chickens for pets and paying good money for imports.... The buyers and the chicks deserve to be protected. I certainly vaccinate all my puppies.. so why wouldn't I do the same for my chicks. So far... have not found Coccidia to be a problem as long as I put dried powdered milk in the feed once in a while.

Wow thank you for the tip, I have never heard of the powdered milk, how does that help? I just want to be clear about the CocciVac. I vaccinate my own with it and any juveniles I ship, and let the buyers know that. However, I do not vaccinate day olds that are going out unless requested because it is my understanding chicks that have been vaccinated could spread caccidia to the unvaccinated chicks. Most buyers already have chicks and most have not been vaccinated. They also need to be on unmedicated feed other wise it will nullify the vaccine. (I know it is a little confusing but well worth looking into).

Sorry if we are getting off English Orps pictures but this so pertains to the newly imported I thought it might be important.

Good luck all!!

I just wanted to add that I agree with Renie'sPeeps, there are a lot of poultry vaccines out there and vaccinating chicks is at the discretion of the buyer and seller. I am not promoting or recommending any of them just saying what works for me.

Nellie, thank you for sharing. Do you have a favorite source for ordering the vaccinations? I think I saw somewhere on this site pictures of how to vaccinate. I might cook dinner for my vet and when she arrives hand her the vials!

I would be more comfortable watching the first time around.

... i water with Dr Willards water and also give them tibicos ...
How do I find out more about these two items? I have just a little backyard flock, but am willing to buy whatever has proven to work. They will always be my babies. I so appreciate the experienced breeders sharing what works for them. Thank you!

Renie's Peeps, I had not heard of the powdered milk. That would be easy enough to do. My little guys have not been vaccinated for Coccidia. If I ever have chicks they certainly will be. How does the powdered milk help? Curious minds want to know.

This may be ignorant, but is it possible to keep the English Orps without using more than just good feed and good sense? I don't really want to keep a pharmacy. Yes, I care for our birds, but not more than DME and good organic food and clean living space. Honestly, if the English Orps are going to require something more, they may not be the breed for me.

I think anything new will be the same way. We are a world apart. And even visiting another country people run the risk of contracting some 'unwanted bug.' They are just not immune yet to all they will be exposed to here. Actually from my farm to yours we would have different bacteria but from one country to another is much more so. They are exceptionally beautiful and well worth the effort to have them in my opinion.

I do vaccinate my birds because I show. However, they get fresh water and regular feed.

The only time my birds get extra vitamins is when I plan to breed. It helps the chicks hatch better and if there are any deficiencies in the flock you won't have problems with the chicks. I give them red cell.

I totally understand why anyone would want to put in all that money, time and effort - I've spent more than I ever imagined I would on chickens, but I'd never sell anything locally around here if it needs a lot of boosters to keep them going. My Chocolates seem to be doing just fine so far. I stuck them outside early (as I didi all my chicks thie year) and they get plain ole' Blue Seal or TSC feed and regular water - no organic feed here, but lots of table scraps and treats and only occasional vitamins. I'm expecting my Jubilee pair next week and the same will go for them. Chickens are just chickens for most folks around here and I can't see my husband taking to 'babying' these birds at all - wont' be a good selling point for me in the least, with him or local buyers. However if I was to really get into shipping and the like I can see it being a good investment...something to ponder I guess.

Since I bought my 5 choc Orps, I have done nothing special for them. They get the same 16% feed the rest of my flock gets. They get the same water out of the same hose my other birds get. They have been on the ground a few times, but not much. I have given them some Corrid because I thought I saw signs of cocci in one of my birds. I may have imagined it... Anyways, my only other problem was the crop impaction and my boy recovered wonderfully.

I don't want to lose the money I have into them, but I am not going to treat them like they are frail and going to die on me if they aren't treated like royalty. They are birds, after all. So far, as I said, I haven't had many issues with mine. And I have done nothing but the norm. for them.

;)
