I have a Black that looks almost all green in certain light, does that mean she has gold.red? I thought it was pretty.

You can't get too green. What color is her under fluff ? It should be as dark as her top color if she is a true black. Look at the feather shafts too. They should be deep black, not grey, or blue.

Yes I had heard about the silkie folks having problems with finding true blacks within the breed... Learned that from Vivi. I just figure too a lot has to do with what was used to derive at certain breeds made the difference.... Cook used several different breeds when he worked on the Orpington. Soo I think that has to be considered. I am glad we are all having this discussion. ")

Ok Well just how in the world do you get a TRUE black???? Do we have to go back to the Australorp ??

You can cull a line for blue. Look at the shafts of the under fluff. Those shafts and fluff should be deep BLACK, not grey, or blue. Sometimes it will age out brownish, but never grey or blue on a real black.

Of the pullet that ViVi just posted, look at the the skirt fluff . She is from a BBS breeding , I'll bet. You can see purple tones on top and grey in the underfluff . Some of that may darken with mature feathers, but she is carrying silver, not gold. She is a doll though !

Renie, Ray connor said that in his book.working in australorp..see lots of people can help you..Its probably not that big a deal..if shes good type bird , ask these guys how to work it out..they have been at this long time have seen results.

The ones that have the gold in their necks probably have only one dose of the gold gene, where as the ones with the red have two doses. The gold gene is what makes a bird any of the colors from Buff to the deep mahogany red, there are other genes that are with it that creates the depth or richness of color and all the different shades.

Ok then why are there blacks out there with a red feather on their necks and some have gold?
