I know I don't take very good photos but found that if u have a decent camera and u set it to live or action mode then it will capture pics without the blur. Didn't even know my camera done this til I was taking pics of my son jumping in the air. Then off to the chicken house LOL

Christabelle, i give my culls away to people just wanted a laying flock or sell them at auction.
As far as getting birds accepted in the standard it is a little more to it than just showing them on a regular basis.  Usually you need to be part of a club working with a group of folks who are breeding that particular variety and get a standard written for that variety. The over all body type would be the same but legs and eyes and beak color might be different than other varieties. I believe it takes at least five years of breeding and then I know i am leaving somethings out but trying to give you a overall explanation, It takes a certain number of folks showing at one time a good number  of the variety and it has to be set up ahead of time with APA. It does help to be showing them along. Hope you are part of the UOC.

Thank you. I always think things are easier than they really are. I am rather dense sometimes. I think I spent too long in the military. It didint actually occur to me to try and join a club. I am now though- or at least I paid and applied. Thank you for your reply!! Your orps are to die for!

Well one good thing you can always eat your culls,lol  Actually I sell them to other breeders or if they are really bad I sell them to a guy that eats them.  The SOP book explains the process for admitting new colors (I should read it again).  As for photos I suck at it so you better wait until someone else comes along to answer that.

I don't think I could eat them... Don't get me wrong... I love chicken, but I raise cornish X for eating. They are impossible to get attached too. So far everyone in my family has a flock of spotted orps. I feel weird about selling my culls... I guess people buy hatchery stock though and all my birds look better than that.

So I got the shelf liner and panty hose. The shelf liner worked out good. The panty hose not so much. I did a "test run" with eggs from the fridge to see how this was going to work. After putting egg cartons with eggs in the baskets it seems like too much of a tight squeeze for the chicks to hatch on top of the eggs. Am i doing something wrong? Or should i not use the cartons? Just trying tobfigure out whichbway im gonna go before lockdown on monday. I might have to build a wire wall like Alton showed. Heres a few pictures to show the setup

It does look like a tight squeeze, but I've never hatched out chicks.

The hanging fluff is pretty, but is NOT calledfor in the British, or Us SOP. It happens to be what is winning at the moment, rather like the oversized Rocks and Orps that are winning here when they should be disqualified according to the standard.

Think about the practicality of keeping a flock of Orps with all that hanging fluff. Could they go out in the mud and rain, and forage, or would you relagate them to being ornamentals like Cochins ? Read the APA SOP, and decide what you want to breed, especially if you ever want to show successfully.

I guess I don't understand. Are you saying rock X orpington crossing are winning today and should be DQ or being fluffy should be DQ?

Let me know how it works Michael. The egg hatcher tray in my Cabinet bator seems tight to with the eggs laying down but they hatch. They can go sideways though. I won't be trying it until next week.

Wierd. I didn't read any of that into what she said. She said oversized Rocks and oversized Orps and that according to the SOP, the fluff should not hang that low. But then I suppose depending on the competition, fluff wouldn't take off enough points to hurt?
