The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I love looking back at photos of some of my favorites and seeing their progression.
Here is B Boy at 5 months. I noticed he doenst have a red comb yet so that alerts me he will probably be large as he is maturing slow.

He hatched the latter part of May last year. He is still filling out but he is breeding now. I actually have a few chicks pipped in the incubator off hiim..

He weighed over 10 lb a few weeks ago. He is gentle too. I am hoping to get some great chicks off him. He is just special to me because he brought me great delight when I needed some physical hope. I remember pushing myself to get up and go out to see the only two chicks I had hatch for the Spring of the year. A hen hatched him and a pullet and they made it with out much care because i was not able to check on them or move them to proper pen. They grew and could get out of the coops and just ran the yard all day and i would wonder if they would make it or if something would get them. I sure enjoyed seeing them out on the green grass foraging.

Love the progression of photos Julie ! Gives everyone hope that those big footed , clumsy boys might grow into something nice. What a gorgeous boy he is !

If they are eating and the chicks are eating I leave them alone. Sometimes those chickens know more than we do. If the hen will not get off and take care of the living..I kick her off and take the eggs.(it happens)
She is regularly getting off the nest, stretching quickly, and eating. Her "sister" has been completely loyal to the rearing of the two chicks. "It takes a village". I don't think the chicks know which is their mom and since they both laid eggs in the same nest, she might just be their mom.

They are occupying a much needed 5 x 10 grow out pen for privacy and protection. So for the time being I will have to hold off separating the juveniles by gender. The juveniles will just have to behave themselves a bit longer.

When you look at the pictures, it is a lesson in not culling early. He is a very handsome young man. I know you are excited about his progeny.

Good morning everyone, I just wanted to drop by and say hi. I read the thread, but don't often comment. I just wanted to share a few photos of my first broody, "Big Mamma." I love watching her with the babies.

Reniespeeps, here is the one of the cute little splash babies I got from you! I can't wait to watch them grow!

Big Mamma is recovering from a comb injure this past winter. She has lost a little weight while being broody. Any advice for helping her put weigh back on is welcome.

I will never tire of your awesome photos!
Mamma will get back in shape in good time. I give mine extra treats like greens and yogurt so they can show the babies that people aren't so bad- they bring goodies!

When the chicks are getting their first set of feathers, not the baby fluff they are born with, does that give indication as to what color they will be as adults? I have some coming in jet black and some slate blue. A few have white tipped wing feathers, will those be replaced by solid colored feathers usually? These are mostly blues and blacks, but I am guessing the chance of a splash might be there. Though honestly they were all so dark as chicks I doubt it.

Oh, I had asked before about feet with white toes, mine had tips and sometimes up to the ankle white, now they are turning a lovely dark color all the way down. Some almost black.

It is the little things that make me happy.

Thanks!

Yes, it's common for black chicks to have white wing tips here and there but they will eventually be all black.

Thanks for the compliments on B Boy all of you.

Contrastphoto your Big Momma is a mighty fine looking girl. Those chicks are so cute. I love watching a momma hen with her babies. I have three broodies in LF right now and two Choc sitting on eggs and I don't even want anymore chocs. Those bantam hens are some broody little girls
