The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

So, the big plan was to wait until Spring to order hatching eggs, but my boyfriend told me, "Here's the money. Do it now!" So.... I did!
Anyway.... thought I would share the photos of MY English Orpington babies. lol
I went a little overboard....maybe. I actually have to go buy a third incubator. :p I still have two dozen more coming in I think? Maybe it's one....
Here are my BBS and Jubilee LF English Orps and my Mauve, Chocolate, and Blue and Black Bantam Orps. Aren't they cuuuuute? :D I got them from Blue Rein Poultry. :)
And not English, but I also have Lavender eggs in from HinkJC.
Next year I'm going after Gold Laced, White, and Buff hatching eggs!

Best of luck!!!

Big baby boy going through the ostrich phase. Look at those feet !
he is a good looking boy
they grow so slow, i have a tough time figuring out who needs to stay
i have 3 rite now that are about 10 weeks old (2 black 1 blue)
i think i'll probably keep all 3 & give them a good look in the spring

Hey English orpington pros....
How long does a molt usually last? I have partridge orpingtons, I bought out greenfires original imports and was wondering how long a molt usually lasts. They came from Florida so could they already have molted this year?

it depends on the lineage. a molt from start to finish can take up to 3 months I have heard of even longer molts too...but my orps from the first feather drop to back to laying eggs usually takes 4-6 weeks, the faster the molt the better it is for the chicken. Molting is very stressful and painful for chickens. if you do have a slow molting bird i would not recommend putting them in your breeding programs because that will pass on to future generations and long molts are not a good trait to have. birds can get very sick and skinny during long molts because their bodies are using all of the nutrients they eat for regrowing feathers. I would say a 4-6 week molt is normal maybe a couple more weeks if it is the birds first molt.
