The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

This boy is 6 months old. I really do NOT like the way he's looking, but can't quite place my finger on what the problem is. His tail is always down, his wings kind of flare out. He seems to be on the bottom of the pecking order ~even below the pullets. I don't have any other BBS cockerels but do not want to use such an inferior cockerel. Anyone think there's a chance he will improve?

Give him some time, he might just be pulling out the end of his awkward stage

i would give him till spring to shape up or ship out
as a back up plan i would order hatching eggs
by spring you will have a couple other cockerels that may look better

Thanks Piglett, this sounds like a good plan.
Hatching eggs are a crap shoot. You might have to go through 50 chicks, to find the right bird. I think you need to check this boy's DIET. Is he getting a high protein feed, free choice? Are you supplementing that with Calf Manna, and whole grains ? How many times has he been wormed, and with what ?

i have had some luck with hatching shipped in eggs.....i said SOME
a couple times i got nothing
other times i did rather well
i like to go pick up my eggs in person
even if it's a ways off to go get them
my hatch rate for my own eggs last year was between 50% & 100%
when it's still cold outside & we run the woodstove atleast some each day i can hatch like a wildman
once it gets warm my hatch rate drops to +/- 50%
these #'s are using a cheep foam bator
i now have my hands on an as yet untested sportsman
the thing should be able to hatch a rock once i get it set up rite
we are coming out of a molt so i should have plenty of eggs soon to do a test hatch.

I'm not talking hatch rates here Piglett. I'm talking about ending up with what you need to improve your line.If you're just raising birds to sell eggs, that's one thing. To show, is quite another thing !
