My advice is ..... don't consider them to be a "for profit purchase," or even an investment. They are chickens! Recall a year ago the Coronation Sussex were outrageously priced. Today you can't hardly give them away. Only buy them if YOU want them. Don't bank that others will pay you for them in the future. Anyway, that's my take on it.......

Julie,
Your birds are just stunning! Your photography is beautiful, too! GREAT photos, Julie!

Well, that confirms my take on it! I'd give my left eyetooth to have something that gorgeous strutting around the yard, but I can't justify it unless I could make it pay for itself. I have a guilt complex about buying anything just for pleasure, especially something expensive. My husband has actually uttered the phrase, "You never buy anything for yourself!" several times in the course of our marriage. I told him, "You've got to be the only man on the planet who's ever complained about such a thing".

I totally agree with Kathy on that one YB. Just because some one has a color does not mean they have quality . If you just want some for enjoyment that is one thing but You need to know what your doing when your breeding. You can have best quality birds and not know how to breed them and still just have chickens of a certain color. If you have never bred Orpingtons I would first make an investment in a less expensive one and find out what you need to know to breed them to the type you are wanting. . JMHOP.
Color also is very important when your breeding certain patterns like you mentioned. Take blue orps. It is a challenge to breed for the best color of blue and get the lacing right. Constant work. You need to love it.

My breeding experience is with rabbits. My dad had to clean his grandfather's prize racing pigeon's coops as a child, it scarred him so badly that he would never let me have any birds growing up.

Okay, next question..is anyone else going to get them so I can buy some next year for less?

I really hope someone will be giving them away next year, they're simply gawgeous.

They've been on my wish list for a long time already......probably won't happen anytime soon tho.

Great pictures Julie !! Thanks so much for posting the picture of Chester - he is looking really, really good. Winston & Clementine sure made some pretty babies, as did Winston & Minerva !! (And Charlie has sure made his share too !!).

LJ - LOLOL. Goodness, you weren't kidding when you told me how odd she looks. She's still a pretty girl, though. Beautiful color and lacing !!

I've got

How many so far. I have chicks in the hatcher and I don't even see a pip yet. Every once in a while I think i hear peep.
