The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Is there anymore news about the poor little chicks that were dying?

Also... I wanted to ask... Does anyone on here have any experience with using a toe punch for marking chickens... and if you have did you punch a toe webbing or a wing webbing? Also.. what age did you do this?

I lost one more orp

it was the smaller bald one. I will be vaccinating them all this weekend, as soon as I can enlist dh's help as I have to vaccinate ALL the birds. I have to wait to mail any birds out for necropsy since they didn't give me a shipping label and are mailing to me. Thank goodness I have a spare fridge as that's where the deceased are... my son thinks the bald one died due to being cold because it got to 50 past couple days, I thought it would be ok because they group together and the others are so fluffy. I am hoping he is right

. I think he is holding on to the hope that we won't lose them all and he is trying to come with other answers. I feel so bad

he checks on them every day...multiple times to see if anyone has symptoms

eta- sorry, my phone was acting up so I had to fix and finish on the computer

I had gotten 6 Buff chicks from Doug and he toe punched them inbetween the toes webbing on day one. They sell the tiny size toe punches at most shows of I am sure you can find them online. Some will toe punch a certain webbing inbetween a certain toe to keep the lines from getting mixed up. My Buffs from Doug are the left foot left toe. And IF I am smart each different combo of breeding lines I will use a different webbing and take careful notes to not get them mixed up. Good luck hope this makes sense.

Thanks Bill,

I bought one from Cutler Supply. I am just kinda scared to even try it.. lol I want to mark my pure English that I got from Joy. Keeping up with Bands on fast growing chicks is rather stressful... Constantly worrying that I will missed a changing and loose a foot off a bird. Is it ok to use on chicks older than newly hatched.. I mean I see the reason for using it then.. but these chicks have been kept separated. They are growing by leaps and bounds and will have out grown the brooder soon. I will need to move them into the nursery along with some other bbs I have. I do plan on banding later with the expandable plastic rings. This tells me what yr they hatched... I just dont want them all mixed up kwim?

Do you wash the foot... wipe it down with alcohol?? and disinfect the puncher between birds? Do you use any kind of antibiotics on the hole?

I toe punch mine too. You need to chart them though, so you can remember what punch you are putting on which variety or strain or you may forget. (I've done it...)

Here is a picture of a toe punch chart where you can do multiple different punches:

I haven't had any of my chicks get infection from toe punch. I just punch and go. However, they can on occassion heal up and the hole will close. You want to make sure the little tab of flesh comes off the back of the foot and I do it when I remove them from the incubator.

Do you have a way to seperate the chicks as they hatch? CK told me about using little lingerie type baggies to hatch the eggs in and they work well. If you contact her, she will tell you how she does it too.
