The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I've got a roo like that with a very low back and tail. Is that ok? I just have him in the layer pen becuase I wasn't sure.

Not quite sure what you mean by "low back." I think that it might look different because Roger was taking a picture of him looking down - I think to show the width of his boy?

Jeremy your opinion is correct, what we call buff laced here in the U.K. and they call buff laced white in europe, which explains the colour better, buff with white lacing, carries two copies of the blue gene as does splash and pyle which is produced from two blue partridge parents, any mating of blue to blue whether it be cuckoo, partridge laced or any other pattern will produce a percentage of offspring carrying two copies of the blue gene ie: splash, if buff white laced is mated to gold/buff black laced all offspring will be laced blue
I hope this clears any confusion

Bob

Thanks Bob -

I'm glad you cleared that up. I was also seeing the "blue" spots in those birds and agreed with Jeremy that there had to be some blue gene in them somewhere. Beautiful birds, regardless of what genes they carry.

Joy, love seeing those big wide loads you have for hens. Goldie has filled out quite a lot since I last saw her and we need to remember is just a baby yet. She's a pretty thing. I'm with Jeremy; if there are more photos I think we'd all enjoy them. Thanks for sharing. Dave

Hi Dave - good to see you !! Thanks for the compliments. I think they are beauties, but I'm sure I'm just a tad bit prejudiced

Goldie is a pretty girl and she is just the sweetest little girl ever. She is right at 9 months old, so she still has a way to go before she is mature.

You all didn't warn me about the English Orps and their molting.

There was a couple months there that I was convinced that my prettiest girl was going to die. She was so incredibly thin, especially next to her sister. She's filled back in now and is gaining weight again. (still not laying though) I've never had one get so thin while molting - when I picked her up there was literally nothing to her. Now it's her sister's turn, she's molting now.

Now that my "ostrich" one is all pretty again, I'll have to get a current picture of her. But you'll have to wait on the other one, she's looking pretty pathetic right now.

My English Orps tend to molt pretty heavily, but I've never had them get thin like that. How is the other one molting? Is she thin too?

I'd love to see pictures of the "ostrich" I remember when we were all trying to figure out whether it was a "he" or a "she," and whether it actually was some kind of dinosaur throw-back. LOL.

The other one is thinner than normal, but nowhere near what my "ostrich" girl was. (they are nicknamed from my son - he calls them the Fat Girls) Her keel bone was prominent and she had very little meat on either side of it. Her comb is getting red again so I expect she will start laying again soon. She quit laying in September.

I will get a picture of her today since it will be sunny out.

The sun & the chickens just don't want to corporate, but this one is a little better

I wish I could see his tail, but he looks awesome Roger. Can't wait to get my eggs from that boy !!! Love that big round chest and the back looks good in that photo. He sure does remind me of his Daddy !!

My oldest juveniles are now just over 5 months old, they were in the backyard today so I took a few pictures.

This is Maggie, teasing the other chickens in their run.
