I use poulin feed.. and it has a natural MOS in it.... what ever that is. but between that and the powdered milk... I don't have any poop problems. I think the BIGGEST thing that should be addressed is cleanliness. Keep their dispensers clean and filled with fresh food and water daily. Keep the litter turned and replaced when it is too soiled....I sprinkle poultry dust around every time I put in new litter.. I worm and debug my birds twice a yr. I realize this method won't stop viruses and such.. but it does give them a better chance at a healthy life.

OH almost forgot.... I muck out the yards after every winter...If you have access to sand.... then put a fresh layer of it in their yard after you muck it out.. This will cut way back on parasites.

I cant find the original post about the powdered milk. Can some tell me what it is supposed to help with.

if you cant drink out of their water fountian, then neither should they..mine get changed every day and 2X day in the hottest weather.dishes washed 1X week unless they need more.

its best to use regular milk, powdered milk doesnt have the whey , an important ingrediant..30 chickens will consume a gallon a day..if you want protien out of your birds, you need to put some in..there are a lot of reasons why farmers feed it, table birds often given corn and milk to get table ready.mostly used in winter as there should be buggs a pleanty in summer. i think they use just as a protien boost..ive never heard of anything else.

I use powder as I was told to do so and have had no deaths from coccidia. I add some to the feed at the first signs of any loose poop.. and walla... back to normal Has nothing to do with protein. This has been my own experience.

One last update before I close everyone up and call it an evening.
5 white orps have hatched so far...........Legbar Orps are still piped (it's killin me not to open the hatcher to help.......

.......but I know better........).
At 8:30 Cuckoos and LF Chocolates were also pipping

! Now if Mother Nature will give them a helping hand tonight

very interesting, my husbands grandfather owned a 4 star resturant years ago...they raised all of their chickens for that resturant from his perspective a table bird protien goes in protien comes out...you wonder if the old timers used it for other such problems too, with a small dairey also used for the resturant the milk was cheap..those were the stories he told.

You Know reniepeeps, I have never seen that disease in over 25 years of chicken keeping..Its scarey everytime somone posts pics of what happens ..weve dealt with mereks, heart problems and and assortment of other ailments but never ever have I seen coccidia.

Well I have a personal story that I was so shocked that it happened that I still cant beleive it..this probably belongs in emergencies and diseases. but it involved my english orp baby..its about how tenacious a racoon can be..I had my baby EOs out in the A frame that has heater in back house part, it is lined with rabbit 1 by 1/2 " wire that racoons cant reach through and weasles cant fit through..so I thought..at night the babies when it warmed up slept out in the A frame little too close to the edge, well over several nights this racoon worked a hole right where the babies were sleeping, he grabbed an australorp and the EOblue..I was so stunned when I opened thier door and a couple didnt come out..when I looked in there , it was pretty shocking.

I couldnt bring myself to take pictures of how bad things were , just trying to save them..the australorp had a big wound on back, EO had just been completly opened up skin pulled open approx 1/2 in below the hip bone, entire thigh was ripped open entire side,, I ran got surgical tape scissors, antibiotics everything,,had to use rubbing alcohol as steril..what a mess..I seriously did not think this chick would live, I shaved the baby feathers all the way round, cleaned it up the best I could..pulled the skin together, used cut strips of the tape as a butterfly stitch there was a big gapping hole down into the leg that i cleaned with warm water and syringe the best I could but it was deep..tried to pull that somewhat back together but it was stubborn..I didnt have high hopes it would make it..fretted for days..i slathered the outside of wound with antibiotic cream, and closed it up with lg bandaid..I thought well, at least I tried..I will probably go out tommorrow morn and find it down and gone..the australorp had a little more fight ..patched that one up second as it was only slightly better and trying a little more..

I should have taken a pic of this bird with the big blue bandaid over butterfly stitches..it was quite a sight, then put antibiotics in both waters..for about a week it was touch and go .finnaly got ahold of vet she came down and gave shot of tylavan? cant remember the name in breast.of both..the australorp had well rebounded..but the EO was still kind of struggling along..would get up drink and eat a little which helped then right back to sleep, very very lame..

I finnaly got around to taking a picture or 2, the EO developed a huge pocket of infection in a blister like lesion back of right thigh despite high doses antibiotics. . the injury was on the side under wing and I didnt want to disturb it to try and take a pic of the scarring .

the white thing in the cage is a frozen water bottle as it is hot today. those stay frozen all day


the infection right upper thigh has just been drained using sm guage needle , did not lance it for fear introduction of another type of bacteria..you can see where it was .


this is a lot of infection for such a little bird and with bombardment of antibiotic treatments.the neddle had to be moved to remove as much as possible..


this racoon still comes back every night despite many hair pulling contests with my dog who has treed this animal every night , it doesnt give up..we are borrowing a trap.

OMG... You deserve a metal <hugs> What a great job you are doing. We have been very successful with a trap here so I hope you are too. I bait ours with peanut butter. but you run the risk of a bear.... They LOVE that stuff.
