The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Since the USPS has been catching a lot of flack lately... I want to take a min to brag on them for such a good job they did for me this week. We had a cold front coming through so I knew the temps were going to drop back down out of the 90s and I had some chicks that needed to get to Washington State. The chicks are 3 weeks old and feathering quite nicely. I shipped a doz of them in an adult shipping box with shavings and 3 cups heaping over with Growgel B+. Didn't pack them up until Wed at 12:30 which gave me enough time to get them to the PO just before the truck got there to take them away. I didn't want them in the box any longer than need be. They were shipped via Express mail and all arrived safely in their new Mom's arms Thurs around 3:30 the very next day!!! So they were in route just a little over 24 hrs..and traveled from NH across the US to Washington! "Bravo"

I know there has been some discussion about not shipping older chicks... BUT.. these birds are like I said feathering over nicely and they filled that box let me tell you...12 of them with the empty box weighed 8.2 lbs. Soo there was warmth from body heat and shavings... yet.. the box is tall and vented which allowed for heat to rise. They arrived in great shape according to their new Mom.

I have some more if anybody is looking for some really nice fat chicks lol or maybe I should should say.. Phat Chicks

Any idea what size cage to show these birds? Our 4H Poultry club is brand new this year, we can show our birds but need to supply our own cages, and of course my 8 yr old wants to show the Eng Orp pullet.

I had to make my own a long time ago, used heavy guage wire..standard cages were too small..they were beyond squished in there, now they have room, I cant rember exact measurements..they sell cage clips at TSC and cage wire that is tall at lowes...they had a roll there that makes one large cage for 16.00, a pretty good deal winds up to be around 20.00 per cage with clips ect.. which is not bad, and last forever if cared for...I like the 1 by 1/2 " wire, even mice cannot get through those holes.. they are non rust too so that is nice..stack them for following year..

We will have to make some also. The state show had some big enough but the smaller parish and district shows don't have them big enough. However I guess I actually need my birds first. We do have her 3/4 English we gave to my dad she'll show again if we don't get the new birds.

First I wanted to say thanks for the compliments on the crele project roo.

We are really happy with this generation and can't wait for the next one. It will be the 5th and am hoping for a really good result! It has been a long road but I think we are very close.

The funny part is I did successfully hatch the Legbar orps with the imported shipment from last month, but I don't want to give up all the hard work I have put into my own creles, so we will see later this fall what the next generation looks like.

Then I wanted to say a little about the postal service as well. A week or two ago I had joined in the discussion on the delivery of eggs and chicks. If you saw the post then you might remember that I said I was installing a digital recall thermometer in some of the boxes of chicks-mostly juveniles and wanted to post some of the results.

I am thrilled with the outcome so far. We have not had a complete loss yet so I can not say what the temps might have been in the losses. But for the ones that have arrived safely the temps have ranged from an all time high in a box of day old chicks of 100 degrees as a high (for day old chicks that is perfect) that went to WA, and the low of 48 on a box of juveniles that went to CO.
Today the Jubilee hen arrive SAFELY to OK with a box temp high of 87 and a low of 78

. The outside temperature here was 88 when she shipped and in OK was about 104 (and who knows what in between) so the post office took very good care of our little girl. It was a two day journey and she arrived in good shape. Had the box been left in a vehicle or on a dock the temps would have been unbearable in the box.

A BIG thank you to the postal service workers for seeing that the live shipments are arriving safely!!

Also a kudos to the PO on the delivery of our chocolate chicks a week or two ago. Expedited shipping worked wonderfully. I finally figured out that another PO in our area is much better than the local one, so I got a PO Box there. They're really nice, and when I told them the trouble I was having with the local PO, they all laughed. Quite telling!
