The Legbar Thread!

Is this a Cream Legbar? She was the only one to hatch from some Ebay eggs, is now 2 months old (top pic), and I suspect impurity. She hatched with the pattern & coloring of a female Cream Legbar, except for a little bit of an orange hue. I also have a pic from when she was a week or so old. She is the orangy chick in the bottom pic, (pictured with a white Legbar hatched from a different source of eggs (madamwolf's from byc- 6 out of 6 hatched!). Anyhow, as she is feathering in she looks nothing like my other Cream Legbars which were acquired from reputable breeders and look like the Greenfire Farms standards. Plus now she is getting blotches of red on her back like a rooster would. So either she is not pure, or else is from a strain I am not familiar with, or could even be a rooster for all I know. Thank you in advance for any input! I have decided to put her (or him) with my EEs, afterall it was a blue egg.

I got a good shot of my roo yesterday and wanted to share. I just love this guy. Hopefully the next time I post it will be because I got an egg from the hen.

Is the top pic the same and the brown chick on the right?

Top pic looks like a CL rooster for sure, and I would not have doubted purity from that pic. If the chick is the same bird it does have a visible male head spot from this angle (which a bit troubling).
I think the appearance of these chicks is VERY varied due to the multiple sources of the genes involved. Many of the UK birds look different to the ones GFF imported, and they have/are about to bring in yet another unrelated line. Each unrelated line will have their own "individual cluster" of genes so some variation in color/pattern is not to surprising.

Is this a Cream Legbar?

I don't know why, but I find all these non-standard things that keep poping out very intresting.

I definatly have not seen any red down like that on any other Legbars. How many chicks hatch from that breeder. What do you know about the source of their stock and breeding practicles (i.e. do you know what other breed of rooster are on the farm and if their is any possibility that they ran with the Legbars)?

The red may be another ressessive modifier, but I am not sure what?

I am not seeing the white spot on the head, but I think that the barring gene doesn't show up well on red down. I am also not seeing the chipmonk stripes, but they could be covered by the red modifier gene.

At any rate this bird is definatly well crested and has the barring gene, so it very likely is a pure Cream Legbar. If this were my bird I would keep an eye on it, but not use it for breeding unless in an emegency situation (and then I would keep 100% of the offspring so that the gene wouldn't get into anyone elses flock until I could determine what it is and if the line is pure or not).
