The Legbar Thread!

I think my second girl laid her first real egg yesterday. They're not this blue - this is an iphone picture
First is my NH red egg, then my legbar hen then my juvie pullet's egg then the one I found a while back in the nesting box that I thought she (juvie pullet) had laid before - it's a bit tilted in the photo so it looks rounder and less oval.
The eggs are all the same shape and rounder at the bottom than my Amerauacauna's egg.
Beautiful Eggs! Do you like your Legbar. I am really considering getting a Trio. Are they nice birds?

Thanks. I do like them though I really have not spent the time making my birds pets per se. I only have one named bird, the very first hen I bought in 2010 - Laverne, a Plymouth Rock - I sold off Shirley last year. I did not intend to name "Favorite Guy" (Splash Copper Marans) but my son and husband LOVED him and it was a hard blow when he had to be put down. I think the Legbars are probably very good birds for pets - temperment seems there and they are a nice light breed. My rooster does not seem agressive but my older hen can be a bit so but I have really little chicks running around the pen as we speak with no issues what so ever - 2- 4 week old chicks. When I solidify who's staying and what I'm breeding then I'll start naming and the like.
So...I think they will make a great flock for what ever purpose you wish. JMHO

I have just email the administrators and asked them to change my user name from cflaming to Flaming Chicken.

Just giving all a heads up.

Thought I'd jump in and say hi since I'm the new mama of 3 little legbar boys, 2 cream and 1 white. (Pretty sure the white one is a boy) It's my luck I'd hatch all boys. I have six more legbar eggs in the bator and I'm hoping for some hens to go with these roos

I got my first batch of eggs from madamwlf, I highly recommend her if anyone is looking for eggs.

I know white isn't an official type of legbar, but I think it's an interesting twist of genetics.

Very Handsome boys! Welcome to the thread. Hope you get some girls next. Hard to tell for sure what the white one is. Suspect a boy because I dont see the stripes of white girls.

Hi all,
In case anyone is interested, I posted two cream legbar roosters on craigslist Yuba/Sutter, CA. PM if you want detailed descriptions or individual photos.

Oh, gorgeous egg colors. COngratulations!

I don't use Pantone for egg color, but I think that's a brilliant idea.

RunswithChicken, darling chicks, congrats. Hope you get more pullets in your next batch.

I have a Cream Legbar pair about 6 weeks old, and the roo's comb is coming in crooked. The pullet's is less developed, but seems to be potentially crooked as well (but she has a nice crest). I am attaching pictures.

They come from different sources of hatching eggs, but hatched by the same person, and then raised since about 2 weeks by me. What is the chance they boy will grow out of the crookedness? Is the girl's comb likely to be crooked when it comes in?

Any recommendations regarding diet, etc? I've had success in the past taking a chick I got with crooked toes and almost completely healing them by improving their nutrition as they continued to grow. But then the ones I'm raising now shouldn't have any diet problems...

Is this likely just to be genetic? Or possibly conditions during incubation or post-hatch (which would make more sense if they BOTH have crooked combs, since they come from different breeders - but of course all descended from the GreenFire lines).

Here is the cockerel (with the pullet in the corner, out of focus):

These are pretty common among the american line of cream legbar. The crooked combs appear to be genetic. Congrats on your pair. And welcome to the Legbar thread. Lots of great discussion to be found here.
