The Legbar Thread!

Why would they need a color chart when they state Ameraucana has "a distinctive blue eggshell coloration." If they can lay all those colors in that chart ... why can't any other true breed lay different shades...... I'll answer that myself.... there are standards.... sometimes they are just ignored.......

AMERAUCANA LARGE FOWL

Ameraucana large fowl are in the APA “All Other Standard Breeds” (AOSB) class of chickens. They were admitted to the Standard in 1984. Ameraucana is a general purpose fowl and has a distinctive blue eggshell coloration. Disqualifications include presence of ear tuffs and absence of beard & muffs.

Does anyone know who the legbar breeder out of Lodi, ca. They sell on eBay under the name of vintagells. I would like to find someone with legbar eggs in Ca that I can pick up. I have a sister n Lodi that I may just have to visit...

Pantone colors: here's one reference: http://pantone.wikia.com/wiki/Pantone_Color_Matching_System

I ran into them when looking for fabric online. Some sellers include a Pantone number so you can get a more accurate representation of the color than a computer screen might give.
Oh thanks normanack-- I think I was aware of those. There is also a color chart for eBay sales....and I forget the name, and it is in the other building right now. And is this a hoot or what??

That ameraucana color chart that LAFreewayChickens has posted, is the same one that I had posted a link to earlier....it is based on the UK Araucana club-- the maker of which derived his colors from actual shells....but if you look closely at the multi-colored strip it is pantone colors-- so the circle closes.

It seemed at one point my cream Legbar's egg was a match to the C15, but on this monitor that color is wayyyyy too green to be a match. Part of the problem is different monitors, different printers, different lighting and different results from cameras. IT is very tricky. There is a whole science of colors...'more than you would ever want to know' for sure.

Thanks normanack and LAFreewayChickens.

Last thing---- have y'all tried matching? and what do you do if your own egg is between colors or doesn't match any exactly?? :O)

That's why you pretty much have to send for one of the printed charts, it cuts out the problem of how your monitor is adjusted. Through the Araucana Club they are only $3.

I also need to get a copy of the Marans egg color chart.

That seems a bit caustic. I think the range of colors are there for consistency. You can discuss with another breeder the color are you are getting without having to factor in variables. Your definition of robin's egg blue and my definition of robin's egg blue may not be the same. If we both have the chart in our hand and say "C15" (for example), we both know what the other person is seeing.

Speaking of robin's egg blue, how'd you like to get THIS color?

We always have lots of nesting in our yard. Every once in awhile I find a fallen egg or half a hatched shell on the lawn.

I just put my first two Legbar eggs into lockdown. I haven't been this excited about a hatch in a long time! I also set about a dozen of them today, finally all three girls are laying, the last started a few days ago so I had a big variation in the POL for each one.

BYC user "Phage" is in San Diego County and has Cream Legbar chicks for sale. I bought Cream Legbar chicks from her at the last San Diego BYC meetup. At that point what she was selling were chicks she had hatched from eggs she had purchased from other breeders. You could PM her, or look on San Diego Craigslist. She currently has chicks posted for sale there.
