The Legbar Thread!

? . . we're in the midst of 12 days of 100 or more. We hit 108 on the 28th. Today's going to 104, 105 tomorrow and 103 Friday and Saturday. This is pretty unusual for us.

I just looked at the forecast and it's supposed to hit 106 by Friday. This is Michigan: "Water Winter Wonderland." The hottest temperature on record for the state is 112 in 1936. For context (from Wikipedia):

" The 1936 North American heat wave was the most severe heat wave in the modern history of North America. It took place in the middle of the Great Depression and Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and caused catastrophic human suffering and an enormous economic toll. The death toll exceeded 5,000, and huge numbers of crops were destroyed by the heat and lack of moisture. Many state and city record high temperatures set during the 1936 heat wave still stand to this day. The heat wave followed one of the coldest winters on record."

Thank you all for your nice comments. It is very sad that I lost that hen. She was my favorite on the whole farm and I would give any other chicken I had to get her back. IT seems like it is always the "special" chicken that ends up dying for some reason :(

Apparently this is pretty common though. I contacted some other sellers I know and 2 of them have lost cream legbars this summer. One lady said she lost 4 last week! Maybe this breed is not as heat tolerant as we like to think. :(

Hi All,

I have pictures today of my Cream Legbars:

Is Cockerel 3 the best of them?

Ron

Thanks for posting your photos.

#1 does have a great crest. I have one with a huge crest too but his covers his eyes. I like the out of the eyes crest better. #1 doesn't have any cream color in his crest. I have seen a lot of the breaders in the UK select for that black and white color cockerel.

It may just be the photo, but #2 looks like he has a really broad stance and a to be the largest one.

#3 looks like he is the smallest. I can't tell if there is any twist in the the comb from the photos, but he does look to have the best comb.

I am on the hunt for a new hen even though I know it is pretty slim.
Bryce,
I have this girl that hatched from the eBay eggs I bought from you in February. She isn't laying yet but should be soon. I would be willing to ship her to you after the heat wave ends. Let me know if you are interested.

She's the girl in back with the crest in this picture. The non-crested girl in front is from the other guy I bought eggs from at the same time. All the ones I hatched from your eggs were crested.

That is the nicest offer. Hope there is a happy ending in site.

I am sorry to say that today my cream legbar hen passed away due to the extreme heat wave we are experiencing right now.

Does ANYBODY know where I can buy a fully grown adult cream legbar hen or 2 for my rooster. I am afraid he will die of depression now because they have been raised together since they were little. I know it is a long shot because so many people are buying the CL right now but I need to try. If anyone has one please let me know

So sorry to hear that Bryce.
She was a super hen.
