The Legbar Thread!

I don't know if it is some of you guys bidding that eBay auction up but $305 for 6 eggs is kind of crazy.

My luck has been bad with shipped eggs. I have two Cream leghorn pairs from Greenfire and had been interested in this egg auction but I'll just wait until mine are ready. If it's y'all bidding and you feel comfortable with the price, then good luck to you! Whoever wins, please come back and post.

The Fancy Chick had crested cream legbar chicks on their website for $35 each - sold in pairs ($70 per pair). This was a couple weeks ago. They're not selling them on their website now because they want to wait until they are getting enough eggs/chicks to fill the orders. So when the eBay auction went over $210 (what 6 chicks would cost from Fancy Chick), I stopped bidding.

A 50% hatch with shipped chicks would be great - which means whoever wins will be paying over $100 per chick. Why not just buy the chicks directly from Greenfire? The only advantage is getting them now rather than waiting till Greenfire has them.

That's the way I look at it, anyway.

Yes, they could get a trio for what they are going to spend on a chance of getting chicks from shipped eggs!

BTW, daisyjack, I think your Cream Legbars are much better looking than those on Ebay. When do you think you will have eggs and/or chicks available for sale? I also love your Swedish Flower Hens, and though I have already hatched eggs from two different sources, I may be looking to add a few more for diversity next spring or summer. You don't happen to have Black Copper Marans, too, do you?

I'd love to start a breeding project of only the crested variety. I just love the crests. A bird without a crest would be sold and only crested birds used as breeding stock... unless the non-crested one had really great type.

Exactly - you can buy guaranteed chicks for less than what they're paying for shipped eggs. I've got 41 eggs (not legbars!

) in the bator now - just candled (day 4) - and one shipment is doing great - already see veins. The other shipment - nothing. It's an expensive gamble for whoever buys those $300+ eggs.

I had a maran but it was just for my own eating eggs. I just don’t have enough breeding pens. My husband will not build me them anymore. So right now I have taken up carpentry and started building my own.

First I was having difficulty getting the screws all the way in the wood with the drill so I went out and bought myself a impact driver and wow that helps a lot. On the weekend my husband stays home and watching the kids and I am in the shop building LOL. Hopefully by spring I will have more pens for I can add more breeds.

You can also try scraping the screws on a bar of soap before you drive them - it helps alot!
