The Legbar Thread!

So glad I found this thread! We bought 14 pairs from an auction. This is our first experience with CLB. We were told they were were from the "c" line or 3rd import. They are 12 weeks old. I am very excited about them. Most of my pullets look great and will be used for breeding. Now just waiting to see which roos I will be keeping out of the 7. I really want to help improve the breed and hope my flock will be worthy of doing so.

At what age one should cull for bad comb? Both my pullets (10 weeks old), haven't grown a comb yet, but I can see that it is not straight. Is there are possibility it may fix itself as they grow?

Lots of great answers from pp, but I thought I'd weigh in too :) if the base of a comb isn't straight, then that's a problem. It's not one of the first things worked on when improving our breed, ie weight/shape/quality of flesh and bone, but in the end it will matter some. If the base is straight and the comb itself is floppy in your girls, this is not a problem. If the comb is wickle shaped then you most likely have a bird with a cranial hernia. These should be moved away from as much as possible if your desire is a straight comb with crest. A few of us have also had cockerels with floppy combs straighten around 1 year. I've found that 1-2 years old seems to be a great time to evaluate combs, including individual bird's ability to cope with the cold. HTH and best wishes :)

Thanks for your input. I guess its too early to tell at this time. Will have to wait for a few weeks at least

I now have a trio of CCL thanks to Tripell . About 14 weeks old . Shipped eggs got me zero . I knew the risk on shipped eggs but usually get a couple .

Jerry, I had a wonderful time talking to you about your projects and meeting you. Have fun with them and it will b fun to see them full grown.

could anyone help me out with this male legbar..This is the first one I've ever had. So I don't know anything about breed standards on them. Is he good enough to use in a breeding program? A friend sent me 2 eggs to hatch and he's what I got,she wanted me to see if I liked them..now I need to find some girls for him. He's 5 months old.

hi coops-
I like your rooster, and I see a lot of positive things about him. Congratulations on your hatch. Looks like he has a straight upright comb, nice yellow legs and beak, and nice clear yellow, tail angle -you cannot tell from the picture, and we are discovering that from pictures colors can be very different from 'real life'---

Here is a link to the draft of the 'standard of perfection', that the Cream Legbar Club is working on now-a-days - this is the description of what an ideal bird of this breed would be. Look it over and be sure to pop back to the threads in this forum with any questions or comparisions that you may have.
