The Legbar Thread!

hi

all these birds are so pretty!
sallysunshine has legbars and i have one of her roosters. i was SOO surprised to see the size of his comb and wattles!!
im starting to get worried now, because i dont want him to be frostbitten.
i know that vaseline will help. but these are the biggest wattles ive ever seen!
maybe i should not have gotten him.........can you tell me about your experiences?
im trying to figure out this ventilation but no draft coop.

Yes, time to worry about frostbite. Last year I did not have any roosters but two of my gals, a Red Star and RIR escaped any frostbite even in Chicago and no vaseline. I had my coop covered with plastic sheets with only 6 inches from top open for ventilation. I closed those as well during the polar vortex plus they had the option to go into the garage if they got too cold. Hope this winter is not repeat of last winter.

Here are some pictures of my Legbars. Marco, Hope and Faith turned 20 weeks today. Whereas Sheila is 13 wks. Pictures were taken at night so not the best for colors as well as their stances.

Any comments about the quality? I can take it so feel free!

Yes it is getting to be that time of year again and time to start preparing. Frostbite is a concern for many of us in the colder States and it doesn't help with breeds like the Cream Legbar that have such large combs. Last winter I over wintered my first CL male and he did not fair well at all he literally lost half his blade where as my Marans only lost barely the tips.

This year I plan to take much better precautions. I plan to do much research and take any actions necessary to preserve my all my males combs. For one it just will make me feel better not having to see them with frostbite and two I plan to show my younger CL cockerel and don't want him to suffer comb damage.

This is how my last years male did over winter.

Before

During

After

But please don't let this scare you. Others in very cold areas have had very good results over wintering CLs some with minimal damage and others with no damage at all. So it can be done.

Hope looks fantastic so far as far as body shape.

Marco has a red earlobe. I would not expect that to change to the proper white as he grows. Something to select for in the next generation if you choose to breed with him. I would also guess his tail angle will end up way too high- probably past 90 degrees. His comb is going to be overlarge and probably flop, again something to select against in the next generation. Other than that he looks pretty nice. Good leg color, decent barring, good body shape for his age.
Marco

Wow the other picture is much more flattering to his body shape than this one.

Glad to know about Hope. She doesn't fan her tail much like flyingmonkeypoop's girls though. Is that ok? The only downside I see on her is her twisted comb. It has become less twisted as it has started growing but will only find out in a couple of weeks. Will post more pics then!

Marco is a strange fellow, he was precocious but weighs less than 4 lbs at this time. Also his earlobes as you noticed are not white. Its not completely red, but white is so little and spread-out that it is not noticeable from a distance. Do you know if red is dominant or recessive color in earlobes? He is the only cockerel I have, so may have to abandon him altogether if its dominant. Or I may use him to produce some Olive Eggers by crossing with a Red Star and RIR I have. He is currently under surveillance anyways because of noise complaints from a neighbor (1 out of 20 neighbors is the only one with issues)

Hi!

I am getting my first fertile eggs this weekend--and they are CCLs! I am so excited. This breed is pretty, sounds amiable, and are supposed to be good layers, right?

Wish me luck. I'm sure I'll check in with the incubation process!

Cheers,
Jessica
