One of my boys was trying to crow yesterday morning at 29 days old. I can see the crest forming on some.

Any idea at what age a crest has to be there for show? Not that I'm interested (spent too many years in dogs for that!) in showing, just pretty eggs, but I do like having animals as close to their standard as I can get to help preserve the breed.
So far as breeding crested to non-crested, I know that in canaries breeding crested to crested equals bald! But obviously this is not the case with chickens!!!!
Love the picture (avatar) of your chicks. Mine are one week behind yours (21 days). Seeing lots of crests..... some bigger than others. Aren't they adorable?
When should roosters start crowing? My legbar rooster was hatched last spring (I bought him 2 weeks ago) and just noticed he finally tried crowing yesterday like twice when I first let them out, and it sounded AWFUL. he sounded like one of those poor roosters with a crow collar on:/. Could he just be finding his voice?
To tell the truth, I have had brooder babies crow at about 2-weeks. It sounds more like a screech or a scream -- I run over to see who's hurt -- like they got their leg caught under the Ecoglow or something...and they just casually go about their chick business. It isn't recognizable until you notice the timing and the tone -- it is an attempt at crowing.
