The Legbar Thread!

Pics
Thanks. They are even more beautiful in person. They are a little small but of course that is expected at first. She had another egg waiting for me this morning. I was very happy about that.

They really are an awesome breed. Can't wait to see all the little chicks shortly

So i am guessing these 2 eggs are going into the incubator? If the legbars are as good of layers as everyone says she should lay an egg just about every day. Just curious but when did your rooster begin to mount your hen? My rooster is 3 months old, he is probably still a little small but i havent seen him act interested in the hen. He also hasnt started crowing yet. When do you think the crowing will begin? I am not really looking forward to that because their coop is right outside my bedroom window...

He started mounting moments after arriving and being taken out of the box. He was crowing since I got him but my he's older than my hen. I would imagine yours will show interest between 16-20 weeks old. Be glad he's not crowing yet because it is LOUD!

Ok good. I have another month or two left of sleeping in past daylight!
I just hope my rooster matures before my hen starts to lay because it will kill me to eat the cream legbar eggs because they arent fertile

That's exciting! Not one of my hens is laying, not a single egg in 3 days now. I had planned on trying to hatch the Legbar eggs a few weeks after she started laying but we had lightening strike our well out in the front of the house early last month - the day before my Legbars arrived from GFF in fact. Fried everything from the well to the entire house and out to the septic pump and start a fire in the basement. I could smell it but it was so quiet that i didn't even realize the house was on fire until I stood at the front door and saw the smoke coming out from underneath me - adios to my 12 incubating BCM eggs, ALL of which were growing and no house until February or so.

Soooo no hatching for me until the spring when we move out of the trailer in our driveway. I have all the birds in a single large coop since I can only manage one extension cord out there for the winter with the hook up we have for the trailer. Gonna have to live vicariously through everyone's incubations, so please lots of pics and stories.

....though I might try n separate the Legbar pair and see if a friend of mine will hatch some out for me as he's dying to use his FREE Sportsman...if his wife will let him.

Oh my I am so sorry! How horrible- and of course this would happen just as the NH winter is coming on. Will keep your family in my prayers.

I've been lurking, and finally had to post.

Blackbird, I'm so sorry about your housefire. How scary! I'm glad you all got out ok, even if they eggs didn't make it.

Suzie, I am so sorry to hear about your legbar hen. That is so sad. Did you ever hear what the cause of death was? I was planning on trying to buy chicks or hatching eggs from you, but it'll be either impossible or prohibitively expensive now.

I'll probably slip back into lurkdom. I definitely want a pair of these birds, but I just can't bring myself to pay the going rate.

So sorry to hear that! Glad to hear you are all safe though. That must've been scary!
