The Legbar Thread!

Blackbirds, If you need to cull some of your CL because they are not to your standards, I would like to get one or two pullets from you..just for the eggs. I have been interested in this bird for the egg color. Right now, I don't plan on breeding chickens. Let me know. Thanks

Interesting observations on the crests. I have 5 Legbar pullets and 5 legbar roos right now that are all about 3-4 weeks old. Some have these good size tufts that are popping up on the back of their heads and some have a pretty much flat hairdo going on. It will be interesting to see how they grow out. here are two of the pullets - one with a good crest and the other with a pretty anemic crest. Some of the roos has basically no detectable crest at this point. Which I understand is not as critical for the roos, but I still think the crests look cool.

I think I was right about my two white chicks being a pair. Tonight I could see that one was starting to develop a small pink comb.

So what reference works -- books, articles etc.-- are you finding most useful for your projects? I need to start at the beginning, but hope to work up to the hard-core sources if my brain doesn't explode first.
p.s. and wow, your work sounds exciting!
I am always reading all the time. What helped me was understanding the basic genetics when I was in high school. I have read a couple articles and books but none really stand out as far as helping me learn anything. I am like a decorator crab when it comes to knowledge, I just pick it up as I go and add it on. Once you know how it all works, it all makes sense and you can come up with just about anything

So my first couple batches of 'legbarhorns' are growing nicely. Very lively and active. So far they're all coming in like a basic crele color which is what I expected, we'll see how the gender turns out on them. I think I have a total of 10 now with a few more due to hatch over the next 10 days

I've never shipped birds so this may be an opportunity to learn. Will let you know when I'm ready to start culling....Still trying to figure out my breeding plans and number of birds I need and want to keep for next year.
