The Middle Tennessee Thread

Hey all you middle TN people! :frowSo glad @rjohns39 directed me to this thread. I'm supposed to get my chicks tomorrow from Hoover Hatchery and I'm a bit nervous because it's been so cold at night. I've learned they don't seem to ship with heat packs... Glad someone else asked the question about leaving them outside for good around me too. I've also read 4-6 weeks but it's so cold outside right now. Ok, it's gorgeous during the day granted, but the wind is cold and the nights are fairly frigid. Yes, I'm a wuss! :smack

I received my chicks last Thursday via mail and they where all fine, they didnt contact me or send email so chicks stayed at post office for a longer than I would've liked. They were very hungry and thirsty but all 10 are thriving now, mine stays in 24/7 for now still a bit chilly. Have them a good warm spot for when they arrive and you should be fine. Good luck!!!

@Keetonfowl, Did you dip their beak in water and set them in individually like another member suggested? I’m very glad they are all healthy!
Nope I was worried about them being to cool for too long so I dumped them all in ( carefully ) but I did try to dip as many as possible into the water, I say try because they was no way I could tell some apart so I'm sure some got a double dose haha. The ones I missed picked up on it pretty quick, I used save a chick probiotic and electrlights mixed in 1 gallon water and provided 1 thing of fresh water as well along with medicated feed bc of all the bad things I'd heard about mail ordered chicks. Add apple cider vinegar to regular water to prevent pasty butt. I've not lost or had a sick chick yet, hopefully this helps. Also, put down a paper towel and sprinkle some starter on it until they get the hang of using the feeder.

I make sure at least one in five get's a drink and one in five gets food. Then I put them under the sweeter heater. Some will hang out under the heat lamp, while others will head back out to the food and water.

GOT EM! :weeI’ll post pics later but 1. They’re bigger than I thought. 2. The shipping box was a lot smaller than I thought - but make sense. I also got only a few to drink and the rest picked it up quickly. I noticed they weren’t interested in the food but I figured after over 24 hours of traveling being cold I’d give them an hour or so under the heat lamp. You guys have let me know it’s normal for them to sleep a bunch so they’re all huddled under the heater plate now. In 30 I’ll head back out and do the paper towel thing. THey can find it on their own then I believe. Right?
