The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

That was a nice mix of birds. It lets you know what interests you, meat, eggs, behaviors, color of eggs, or bird, things like that. Than you can go on from there.

My second flock included 2 polish. The rooster got his crest pecked open after months of being harassed, and needed to be culled. The hen was "killed" multiple times by the dog. I quickly learned she played dead and was totally hysterical about everything. I also had 3 silkie roosters that fought constantly. Thankfully I also had 2 actual Americana, a buff Orpington, and a barred rock, which started my love of the buff Orpington.

I learned a lot of hard lessons on my second flock, my first was even a bigger mess because it was about half roosters because they were pretty. I always regret learning stuff the way I did but back then there wasn't any internet nor folks on BYC to teach people stuff, so they hopefully can avoid those type of hard lessons.

I forgot to mention by batch of silkies ended up not being my thing. One had a vaulted skull and was mentally disabled, another had a cross beak, and in general I found them good broodies but aloof birds that seemed a bit off.

@TheGreatPapyrus

You can get whatever you want! If you talk to 5 people here on BYC you'll probably get 5 different answers to what they'd recommend.

If you get a chance, look at that chicken chart and think about the things that YOU want in birds. Good egg production - look for that. Good heat or cold tolerance - look at that, etc.

If you don't mind sexlink birds that are bred to produce you could go with ISA Browns...
Lots of folks like buff Orpingtons; other folks say they eat too much!!!!

So...
Take a look at the chart and go with your instincts :)
