The Old Folks Home

I am doing a new gardening method this year and so far I am loving it. My kiddie pool gardens. One has strawberries in dirt with a rain bird auto drip system and the other one I planted tomato's and turnips in grow bags and I have some young trees in a grow bag in a kiddie pool that has a float in it set to 1 & 1/2" of water in the pool with an over flow hole drilled into the pool at 3".

Strawberries I mixed straw and rabbit fertilizer in the strawberry bed.

raised be with lettuce tomatoes, cantaloupe, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, cucumbers

Tomato's with a wire cage around them and the pot in front are potatoes.
It's not a big garden but I am hoping it will produce enough for Dh and I.
This pool has standing water in it 1 1/2" deep. And my plants are loving it.

I've thought about this a time or two (mostly in the fall when the kiddie pools are on clearance and practically free), always wondered if it would work -- may just have to give it a whirl next year.

Quote: In doing some research on raised beds I came across several sites on kiddie pool gardening. One Engineer took kiddie pools, soil and seeds to California and showed low income families how to raise their own food in kiddie pools. Then I found videos on Youtube by Larry Hall and he does them in water and in Walmart re-usable grocery bags with a automatic float. And I joined his page on Face book. The people on there grow everything in Walmart bags and the plants flourish. I had several kiddie pools left over from my turkey. But I did buy them at TSC. Some people are using under bed storage containers or anything they can find to hold a couple inches of water. You will be pleasantly surprised.

chicka, I have an aunt that used kiddie pools like that to raise all her herbs in. She made saw horses, put boards across them like tables, and set 3 kiddie pools per table. That way she didn't have to bend over to tend her herb gardens.

That is wonderful. I love the saw horse idea.

We had pallets laying around in the old turkey pens so we used them. Would like to add another kiddie pool with the walmart bags for my tomato's that I have in pots and the squash that will need to be moved shortly.
I have some herbs in a window box and a few tucked in my other beds.

Evening everyone!!!

Just thought I would pop in and check on all you peeps. You all must be outside working hard too! I am so sorry for all of you in the south, east and west having the horrible, crazy weather. A little prayer that everyone and their critters are safe. Up here we have been having the best early spring in years. The nights are still a bit "crispy" (the local weather just said we will be having a couple nights of frost ahead) so putting plants out can't be done yet, but everything else is way ahead of schedule! The DH and I managed to get all 200 feet of the new 5 ft welded wire fence up replacing the older (actually overlayed) 4 1/2 foot fence that served as the perimeter fence around the chickens' run(s), their semi free range area and my 25/25 ft raised herb garden (with it's own fence of course) in the center. I also managed to get the spring cleaning done in the coop. Tomorrow is getting the peas in the ground (a little late there) and building/planting the potato towers.

I also managed to go thru all the clothes closets,(did the cupboards, drawers and junk closets last week) sorting out all the jeans, coats etc. that no longer fit after after the 35+ lb loss (happy dance) and all the stuff neither one of us has worn for years and stuffing it and all the cleaned out junk into the Escape to be donated to charity thrift shop (going to take more than one trip!). Got the front sunroom/craft room/extra bedroom all cleaned out and the brooder all set up and ready for the new chicks that should arrive by Wednesday.

Just like everyone else I'm sure it's busy busy busy but loving that I am all healed up and able to "get er' done"!!!

Hope you all are having a wonderful blessed spring!!!! Love all the beautiful pics!!!
