The Old Folks Home

We call these pi$$ ants

Those ants are native to Europe. What we have here are sugar ants--Pharaoh and etc.

This works great here for Argentinian ants.

Find a place on the ant trail that will stay dry for a day or two and where the chickens wont eat it. The ants take the bait back and feed the colony including the queen. You should get good control with what you have out there. Here, the Argentinian ants are one giant single colony that goes all the way to Louisiana. When one Ant nest dies off, the next closest colony packs up some queens and heads on over....It is very frustrating! We have our routine though and have not had a major problem in quite a few years.

Let the chickens loose?

You know, my girls have never had an interest in ants - much to my chagrin as they are quite numerous around here, as many different places as we've lived around the country this is the place I've seen more ants than anywhere else.....little buggars are EVERYWHERE!
Identify the ants and get a bait for them.

We have a constant battle against Argentinian ants that we control with a gel bait.
X 2 -- the good news is it isn't hard to make a place accessible to ants but not to chickens. I've had great luck with the liquid Terro bait.

my last house I found ants in the babies room.... i freaked somewhat being a new mom... Called a bug guy to come out. He surveyed my little 90 x 75 foot property and let me know I I had EIGHTEEN different species that he had identified on my property.

this was before chickens before dogs before guinea pigs before aviaries.... I dont know what he sprayed but I was ant free for a couple of years...

But I started using Windex as my ant spray of choice.... In the house everytime i saw a trail I would spray the whole trail and wipe the trail down with a paper towel to clean em up. they rarely came back.

Because I knew that dog food drew ants I rigged a hanging feeder for the dog out side.... a wrought iron plant hanger that could hold a two gallon bowl... then hung it under the patio eves by the door from an eye bolt. it worked great because I could set the bowl at the proper level to feed my Greyhound....

kibble that dropped on the ground would get ants but his bowl stayed ant free.

Well this is my last week of work in Utah. Next Monday I will get on the road to the east coast. I have been busting butt to get everything ready for the house to go on the market. I am just waiting for the moving service company to give us the go ahead to get the house on the market. In some ways I am looking forwards to being alone in PA only because I will have less to take care of in the one bedroom apartment I will stay in until we get our new place. I am excited and exhausted all at the same time.
