The Old Folks Home

oO(sigh) I'm gonna kill my DH. He's bringing a dog home from Houston. What are we going to do with another dog? We already have two. We have Daisy, my lazy old dane, who has her own yard and is too old to do much but bark...at everything except the chickens. Then we have Lexxie, DD's mini daschund, who stays in DD's part of the house because she bullies Daisy. Now DH is bringing home a catahoula. I've never evn heard of them. Apparently one of the grandchildren dropped it off with in-laws when she no longer wanted it and with FIL in hospital this big puppy is tearing up their house, and both are to old to handle it, so the begged DH to take it. I've been doing some research on them, but there's not much out there, and most of what I've read says that they herd by biting or nipping, and that they will try to herd family, as well. I don't know what to do. Will this pup be aggressive towards Maddy? Or the other dogs? Are they trainable? I am sooooo frustrated with DH!!!

Interesting Arielle - I know two folks here who run turkeys and chickens together with no problems. I wonder if it's because it is so dry here?

I have turkeys and chickens together. So far no problems. I wouldn't exactly call Iowa dry as we usually have plenty of humidity, summer and winter. I am however thinking about building a separate area for the turkeys just to give them more room than they have now. I worry more about the wild turkeys giving them some disease than the chickens as we have a lot of wild turkeys here.

tnspursfan,

Calm down it will be okay. Yes the catahoula is a herding dog. They are very smart and very trainable. They are not an aggressive dog but they are very busy. They love to be trained as it gives them something to do. Like most herding dogs if you don't give them a job they will find one and you might not like it. I don't think you will have that much trouble with it and Maddy. I actually think that they may get very attached to each other and where you find one you will find the other. If that is the case you will always know where Maddy is and if she is in trouble because the dog will let you know. They are really very nice dogs. Give it a chance and you might find that this pup was really meant for your family.

Can they be trained to guard the chickens? There was a big hawk eyeballing the run today. I heard my flock sounding the alarm and saw it in the tree line before it flew away. We also get possums, foxes, racoons and coyotes here, though the loud barking of Daisy usually keeps all but the possums out of the yard. Daisy is confined to the house and her own yard.

I need some chicken feed expert advice please! I went to a new feed mill and co-op today and was checking out their feed and prices and the man gave me this website for the company he buys his feed from.
Please tell me if you think this would be a good feed for my birds as there is no meat products just vegetables.

FEEDING DIRECTIONS:
5-Star F-R-M ABF All Vegetable Chick Starter Crumbles is a complete and balanced diet for starting chickens from egg-laying breeds. Begin feeding as the only source of feed after hatch to 6 weeks of age, then switch to 5-Star F-R-M ABF All Vegetable Pullet Grower. Always provide plenty of fresh, clean water.
*Note No antibiotics have been added independently to this feed. There may be a detectable residual level in DDGS, which is contained in this feed.
**No meat byproducts have been added to this feed.

This co-op does not have any other customers that buy chicken feed so he would have to buy 5 tons of it to get it delivered to him. Which means I would have to buy and use it all, not all at once but all!
So I really need some help here please!
