The Olive-Egger thread!

I have a question. I have a rooster that a friend gave me. I know she bought the eggs from someone on here, I think in a mixed lot. My roo hatched from a blue egg, but he really looks to me like he was supposed to be an olive egger. He has a dark beak and legs with a tiny bit of feathering that look to me like a marans cross. His color I believe is called silver duckwing. But he has a single comb. So if he IS an olive egger, single combed roo, if I cross him with my EE girls, is there a chance I will get olive eggers? Assuming he IS an EE/Ameracauna crossed with Marans like I suspect?

From what very little I know of chicken genetics-- someone please correct me if I'm wrong!-- your hen would have to have only barring genes and your roo would have to have only black copper genes for this to work. One of them must have mixed genetics if you didn't get sexlinked babies.

Hi everyone,

This may be addressed somewhere in this thread but I have not made it all the way thru the pages... If I am crossing Blue Splash Ameraucana and Blue/Splash Marans, will the colors turn out the same as if I were breeding them pure by breed and not crossed? I am wanting to create olive egg layers but have the colors be the blue/splash.

I read on this thread the genetic chances of using an olive egger to try to create olive eggers. It was not as guaranteed as using a dark egg layer (marans) and a blue egg layer but still possible you might end up with some. I am sure the eggs would be pretty regardless!

After three days I finally reached the end!! WOOT! I have my OE recipe in the coop, I just have to wait to have a broody so I can bake it! I have a Blue Copper Marans roo over EE hens. Two of the hens lay green eggs so I expect really dark olive from them. One of those may be problematic as she A; not only lays green instead of blue, but B; has a single comb. My blue egg layer could use a bigger egg, but she's my most hard core layer.

My favorite hen is an EE who lays a huge green egg. She is a warm blue with a red head fading to gold on her chest. The combination of her with my Blue CM roo has me all giddy!

Hi Everyone! I never post here...but thought that I would pop by and post a photo of one of my olive eggers eggs. She is a Splash, a product of my very dark Blue Copper Marans rooster and one of my Blue Ameraucana's. I can't get enough of these olive eggs.
12 are in lockdown right now, set for hatch on the 3rd. Cross your fingers for lots of peacombs for me.
