Ahhh mine is the Staffordshire County Show, not very big but I like it because it warms them up so that they are ready for the more important ones later in the year. 🏅🐓

Ah right! One of my family members travels down there to go to the big parrot and exotic bird sales they hold at the same place I think 😄

I mean, I know I can get to Stafford (if I can get a lift) but I could only do that for shows that are on one day only, rather than spread out over the weekend like the federation.

I’m hoping to get to the Great Yorkshire show this year but reading through their terms/rules is quite confusing and I need to clear a few things up before I know for sure.

Did you go to the Carlisle sale?

Unfortunately, I missed out of the Carlisle sale I wasnt feeling too good so I didn't feel up to it.
🙁 Staffordshire County Show is a two day event but the Poultry is only on the second day so it is just a day event. That's why I like it, it is a small quiet Show and is is only a day so it is great for warming the birds up!

It’s good as a warm up but the little county shows are fun to go to, you meet other locals that breed silkies too and it’s great to have a chat with them!

Aw no! I heard mixed reviews of it really. I know Mick’s birds sold for quite a lot but he’s got some of the best in the country so I understand that but I heard that even the ‘pet type’ Silkies were selling for silly money. People bidding for the sake of bidding.

I had some birds I wanted to take but they were a bit young to take plus I was at work 😅

I advertised them separately and there was people who didn’t get anything at the auction wanting me to keep them for them. I work on a first come first severed basis though and a local man who wanted to start breeding them again picked them up. He was at the auction and he said there was lovely birds but the prices weren’t...as I can imagine haha!

This was one of them he got from me...I really wish I could have kept her but I don’t have enough space to keep them all. She was definitely a stunner though so she should do him well.

Yes Mick Goodwin's birds always sell for LOTS, I was debating on a trio of his at the national that were for sale at £225 but decided against it in the end. Most of the good ones were some trios for sale at between £150 and £120 and there were some others that weren't as good but would still be good pets that were a few trios for sale at £80! Your little pullet looks gorgeous 😍. Making me have chick fever and want to hatch loads out right now 😂 haha

I usually go on the basis that pet Silkies are around £10 to £30 each. Show Silkies are between £45 to £100 each. They are definitely a very expensive breed!!

Three of my birds are from his line I believe which I’m pretty pleased about, they have quite good type compared to some others. Now I just need chicks from them 😂 I’m just impatient at times and having hatching withdrawal symptoms!

I completely understand the price for nice quality birds and I’d be happy to pay it myself but some that are advertised are questionable! I’m really iffy on buying birds before I get to see and hold them though as a lot can be hidden on birds and you end up buying something naff.

I know at the Carlisle auction they have someone to grade the birds though so that’s good.

However, I’m done at the moment with adding any new stock in. I’ve got 8 hens I’m breeding from with the one male. I’m low on space though so I’ve got to think logically about what I keep and sell on.

I’ve also started back up with breeding Quails as a side hobby. It’s nice having something I can hatch and not exactly worry about what they hatch looking like 😅

Yeah, I totally agree! I always have to go and see what I am paying for before I buy it. My worst nightmare is paying £80 plus for a bird and when I collect it it turn out to be absolutely rubbish! But most breeders are very honest and helpful it is just those selective few who think they can get away with swindling someone. They ruin the hobby for everyone.

Some more pictures of my birdies, please ignore the muddy feet and bodies 😂🤷‍♂️....
You wouldn't realise they were ment to be completely white would you? Soooo muddy 😂. The pullet in the second photo has a HUGE pom pom!
