Can I ask everyone what they think of this little guy? He’s either 6 or 7 weeks old. Can’t remember exactly. But Dottie is by far our favorite. Such a nice personality, which makes me think boy. She always is standing up the the head chick and getting out in her place. She comes to us whenever we come out to see them. The comb does seem big? I’m not sure what a pullets comb looks like at this age though.

Then we have Pecky who has always been the smallest in our little flock. She is super shy and doesn’t have black pigment. Guesses would be fun. I’ve been thinking Pecky is a girl

I think the 2 new ones are both roosters. I saw and heard the white one crow and the other day the brown one crowed. I am not sure how old they are and their combs look different. What is the best ratio for hens to roosters?

Ah yeah definitely sounds like you've got two boys! Sorry I'm not much help with hen to rooster ratio, I would think it might depend on the roosters, some are much better/nicer with the hens than others so you might get away with a smaller hen to rooster ratio if the boys are on the gentle side. I definitely wouldn't want to keep two boys with a single girl for long though. Hopefully someone with more experience keeping multiple roos in a flock will be more help.

Hello and welcome! What a cute little flock you've got, I hope you end up getting lucky with the male to female ratio!

The cuties you posted are looking a little too young to get a good idea of gender yet to me but maybe someone with more experience could give you a good guess? Just based off your description I'd lean more towards thinking the first is a boy and the second a girl. The comb on the first is still pretty tiny but it does look like it might be just starting to grow in more.

Behavior is definitely something that can be helpful but sometimes they fool you. Some of the ones I was most sure were cockerels based on behavior turned out to be pullets and vice versa. Great photos by the way, they really show the combs very well! I have a terrible time trying to get nice clear shots of the combs myself!

Hi everyone I’ve been reading all the posts and have been lurking here. I hope you don’t mind me adding in?
I’m a new silkie owner and brand new at being a chicken owner. I’ve been slowly getting the itch to raise chickens when I saw a silkie for the first time at our zoo four years ago. I was raised a city girl and when I married moved to more of a small town area with lots of farmland surrounding us. So, 7 weeks ago we picked up our first day old chicks from someone here locally. They are adorable and have grown so much! Dying to know the genders because we can only keep hens. Our neighborhood laws. We are probably picking up four more chicks this next weekend to give us better odds at having at least 4 hens. We are 5 silkie right now but I have a feeling three are males. Super spunky and always duking it out with each other.
Here are our little silkies a couple weeks ago and our 2 D’Uccles (we sold one because Rosy turned into Russel Crow!)

Little cuties! You may not know the gender until they are 5-7 months old. Silkies are famous for being difficult to tell the difference between male and female. You may even have to wait until one of them crows or lays an egg. Hopefully there are some experienced breeder here that can help you out. Gorgeous little flock!

They may have different types of combs, which would explain why their combs look different. I'm ave

That is so cool! Blue must’ve been hidden somewhere in the parents genetics!
I’m looking forward to seeing what I hatch, I’m supposed to have several lavenders among the bunch, we’ll see!
