The Sizzle Thread!

How winter hardy are sizzles? I might have to put a lamp in for my phoenixes anyways, but it does get very cold here and I know that silkies aren't good in the winter at all. AF chick, how did you get that black and white one? Like what breeding? We had a chick we bought at a day old almost that same color that was killed and I'd love to be able to breed another My niece cried when she found out a coon got him. Miss him dearly
Silkies aren't cold tolerate? Wow. Guess I should go relay the message to my flock ;) We've never heated them and we get as cold as -40 with wind-chill. As long as they stay dry, they over-winter just fine.

Considering the likely point of origin for silkies (Himalayan region of China), I would say that they have been pretty cold tolerant for many centuries. They have much more difficulty with tolerating heat than cold.

I was told they would need to be kept in the basement xD Jeez, I feel like a rookie now. All my silkies were killed, so I guess it doesn't really matter at this point :p

Wow.. Nope.. Can guarantee you they don't need to be in the basement!

Silkies have lots of down feathers to keep them warm. Really the only issue you will see with weather is if their feet or crests get wet and freeze. I've had the crest freeze on a hen I have, but she was fine. That was a really cold night, and she had apparently dunked her head in the water and I didn't notice it. I brought her in and blew it dry and she was just fine.

They definitely don't take the heat very well though. Mine pant easily and seek shade.

I wonder if the black one carries khaki. seems that I am getting khaki when I cross this certain roo with splash and I'm not sure if I get it with any other cross.

Quote: Khaki is two copies of the dun gene (I^D); both parents must be chocolate-coloured (I^D/i+) or khaki (I^D/I^D). Percentage-wise, dun breeds like blue: khaki is the equivalent of splash. Khaki cannot hide except in a recessive white bird.

One copy of dun and one of blue is called platinum (I^D/i+ Bl/bl+).
