The Sussex thread!

While we are on the topic of genetics, does anyone know how they got the color for the coronation Sussex? Was this a mutation or what did they cross it with way-back-when to get the diluted gray/lavender color? I am unclear where they got the gene to dilute the black.

I don't know how they brought it into the Light Sussex to create the Coronations - whether they used a Lavender/Self Blue bird from another breed? The genetics are the same as any lavender/Self-Blue breedings, and they are crossed back to the "Black" (Light Sussex) to improve feather quality since the lavender gene is rough on the feathers.

There are also Blue Coronations using the Blue (Bl) gene which is incomplete dominant. If you understand genetics of Blue breeding it applies to those birds as well.

I didn't realize there was both a lavender and blue coronation. I've only seen them collectively called coronation Sussex with no color notatio. I'm no experts but understand the basics of the blue and lavender genes and the resulting crosses. Given this, do blue coronation not breed true? Never heard of a splash coronation.

Somewhere back in this thread somebody created them. I don't think they sell them. From that yes, they would have the Light, Blue Coronation and Splash Coronation...

Interesting! I guess what I know as the Coronation must be the lavender gene. Thank you for the education.

MY CHICKENS HAS GONE CRAZY.
Since I got my new Sussexs 1 hen and 2 roosters it's been full out tribal war ISA Browns vs Sussexs.
Hampton (1 of my sussex roos) has been defending him self from my cross rooster Spencer.
Sussy the sussex hen has also been attacking my cross rooster.

IT'S ALL GONE CONFUSING.

I had a Sussex before and she had no neck feathers because all the males mated with her 5 times a day. How ever our coop didn't have a roof on it and she started to go out all the time by jumping and flying. She was very intelligent but not enough for a dog to catch her and one day we found the remains of her feathers.
