The Welsummer Thread!!!!

you're going to bring me some of your eggs too right?? I think they will cross nicely with the lines I have from Nate. We'll have to sort out the details when you are coming down so I can hatch what your want.

If I get some chicks, maybe I can give you a trio once I grow them out!

I can deal with hatching eggs if only hubby don't drop them LOLOLOL! If we are to get chicks, then he will take them after he gets done with the event down in Waverly unless you want to go along with him. He can pick you up from the farm. He stays in a motel if it is too cold or sleeps in his tent if it is not too cold. The first time there, he slept in a motel, it was tooooooo cold. Last year, he slept in the back of his truck in a tent. Said it was not too bad at all.

I have a 4 month old Welsummer cockerel that I bought with the hope of hatching my own chicks. He was always VERY behind the other chicks in his group as far as growth and development. He also has also always spent a considerable amount of time sitting on the ground, unlike his chick-mates. I'm thinking of culling him because it doesn't seem like he'd be a good breeding candidate. I'd like to make sure it isn't a Welsummer trait in males first.

Thanks!
Stacie

I've never heard of that before. Do you have pictures of him? And ones showing his size compared to the others?

I'd say he wouldn't make a good breeding candidate if he just lays around all the time - if he wouldn't be mating, not much use for breeding.

My thoughts exactly. While he's finally closer to the other chickens size now, I'd say he was at least a week behind in development in the first several weeks. He has been unlike any of the other males I've ever raised (in my limited experience). I waited for him to arrive in the mail and had his name picked out well in advance, so it's taken me a little while to accept the fact that he's not up to par. Going into winter, with coop space at a premium, helps to put things in perspective. I have a few more "Kelloggs" on my spring shopping list.

Thanks!

I'm soooo stoked!!
I got the first egg from one of pink's wellies today. They hatched the last few days of May so that would make them 6 1/2 months old. Here's a few pics...

The last pic compares the wellie egg to a large white egg. I'm pretty impressed by the size of the pullet egg.
Can't wait til the others start.
