You could poison a trapped coon, the only issue I have with it, is now you have poison laying around. I finally broke down and used poison to take care of the rats in my barn. That stuff scares me, to have poison laying around. This is simply rat poison, I've been a nervous wreck for the past two weeks since I've laid the poison out.
I honestly don't believe poisoning is any better than drowning. I would absolutely hate to do either, but I know you have to do what you have to do. If I had to choose, I would use the water and this is why. Water is non-toxic, you do not have to worry about accidentally killing a non-target if you place a cage into a trashcan(or pond) and put the lid on it. It's less stressful for the executioner, to drop the cage into water, cover the lid and walk away. After the animal has passed, you do not have to worry about secondary poisoning. This means, after you bag or bury this dead animal, you do not have to worry about the neighbors dog(or your own) digging it up, chewing on it, and becoming poisoned.
My problems with poison are, they are non-selecting. This means anything and everything that eats that poison, OR the animal that eats the animal that ate the poison is at risk of being poisoned as well. If you haven't used all the poison, now you have an extremely toxic substance laying around. Poisoning is probably not much more humane than drowning, but at least drowning is environmentally safer.
When it all comes down to it, I'm glad to have a firearm at my disposal.
