~*Third Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatch-Athon*~ all poultry welcome!

10 pounds in 10 weeks is remarkable growth!!

WHat bigger birds?? what is bigger than a toulouse?? Wait . . . I think you mean they get older and therefore bigger . . . . .

I was shocked to see the enormouse size of the geese at the Northeast POultry congress. HUGE birds. Like a stuffed toy for a child bed huge!

( brain tossing ideas around and around . . . . .)

That's about the time I start tipping the incubator!! lol What are you going to do with 1000+ babies?? You can't eat that many.

for the geese.. I mean getting bigger as they get older.. I think the top average weights run something like (for full grown drakes) ...16 pounds for African geese.. 20 for Embdens.. 16 for Toulouse.. 15 for Chinese... and 25 for the big Dewlap Toulouse.. Sebbies are smaller hitting around 14 pounds ..

I don't have Chinese or Africans anymore because their attitudes didn't work and play nice with one of our mail carriers..

And I don't have the Dewlaps anymore since they would get too darn big for our oven... (and too heavy for me to lift in and out of the oven without burning the crap out of myself in the process)

edited to add.. lol.. I forgot this part..

We incubated 1800 eggs this past fall (had just over 1700 hatch).. 600 went to a neighbor who doesn't have an incubator but wanted meaties.. we kept around 150.. the others went to a few friends and relatives.. normally we go through over 300 a year just for ourselves.. more if I am hatching for dog food

My bator holds 288 eggs at a time. So far, I have not filled it completely, but each week, the total number of eggs in there grows a little. I see what you mean about the clears taking up space, but with me, that may be a good thing! I got a little carried away at first and put some of everything in to see if they would hatch and only have a handful of the resulting mutts left. Now that I have that madness out of my system, I am sticking to hatching eggs for chicks that I can sell easily. The pure eggs and EEs sell faster than I can hatch them.

300 year is a pretty good number!!

Funny, I thought geese were bigger than that. Maybe it is al the feathers that make them look bigger than my turkeys. lol

@Arielle my American Buffs get even bigger than Embdens. I only have a pair though. Maybe they will make me some babies soon.
Maybe that is the bird I am thinking of-- the American BUff. The bird was sitting and resting in a huge crate at the poultry show and he looked huge and cute and like a stuffed animal.

They always look bigger laying down too. They just kinda spread out...lol
My buffs easily weigh more than all 4 of my turkey hens though I haven't weighed anyone & can only tell from having had to carry all of them around. I'd say my young slate tom will pass them up before too long though. He's a big boy!

The nice thing about geese.. they love grass.. so our feed cost for them is a lot lower than on the turkeys

Well since it's such a beautiful day, I let my turkey out of their pen to run around, Well My hen actually laid on the ground and waited for one of my tomes toms to mount her, (I was so excited because they have never done that and I have really been wanting some turkey hatching eggs) But I'm not sure the toms know what to do lol. Then My big Bourbon Red walk up to her about to Mount, steps on her tail, and she jumps up and runs away, Well they kept repeating the process but nothing got anywhere. But I think as they get older They will get the hang of it...I hope.

I haven't had adult embdens, so you could be right. I was just going off of what I had heard on size. Maybe I better go look it up to make sure...lol

I carry my turkey toms around, and they seem heavy when I carry them uphill to their coop one at a time. So It seems turkey toms are bigger than a goose . . . .
