Folks often ask for the members to tell them what breeds went into a crossbred bird they own. I wanted to illustrate that it was not always possible to even hazard a guess, that at times, the cross will look nothing like either parent, perhaps it will even be a throwback to something in its genetic past.
This cockerel hatched here years ago from eggs sent to me by a someone, an "oopsie" breeding that caught us both by surprise. It came from one of her breed pens, in which she was keeping a lone hen of other lineage, and for specific reasons, did not believe her to be mated by the rooster in that pen. She felt she could ID this hen's eggs anyway, but oops! Happy accident.
Once, someone actually stole his photo from the web to advertise blue Ameraucanas from their farms. We had to ask him to remove the photo, not only because it was not his bird, but....there is not a drop of Ameraucana or EE in this bird.
So, what would you think if someone asked you to ID the mix of this bird? I have a photo of his mother and I know what his father was, will have to look for the pic of mom, but until I can find it, what would you guess just by looking at this guy? We called him C.J. for cracker jack surprise. He lived with my friend Karen for the rest of his life. She called him the incredible jumping chicken because he would hop up and down asking to be picked up.
