Congrats! New hatchlings are always fun.
Super tired today, was in the ER all night with hubby. Been a long 4 months of surgeries with him and trying to recover.
Don't know if any of you remember how we had 11 Muscovy dumped here awhile back. Well they dwindled to 6, then one of the twin drakes vanished so we were down to 5. Three drakes and two ducks who all would come sit on the porch and talk to us. The girls would eat from our hands and all 5 would come when called. Night before last they came up late afternoon for their end of day treats and talked away about their days. We woke yesterday to only 1 drake (the largest) left around. No feathers, no signs of predation. He looks lost like he doesn't know what happened to the others. So two drakes and both ducks just vanished over night. The lead drake is back again this morning. He looks so sad, but doesn't want to join the ducks out back. We did find a hidden nest from one of the girls with 14 eggs in it, so we brought them in. Poor lone drake.
4 out of 5 shipped French Toulouse goose eggs are growing. Hopefully all four make it to lockdown and hatch too.

Hi Celtic! Is your hubby ok now?? That must have been an awful night for you both.
That is also a sad story about your muscovy. Glad you were able to find the nest's eggs to maybe give him some babies? Would a lone drake adopt babies they way I hear a gander would?
And fantastic news on your french toulouse. I love that breed! I will be hitting you up for hatching eggs come next year when they start laying for you.
And thanks for your last pm. I think it would be better to at least wait until I get the other set of duck eggs to time hatches (even if they are in separate bators). However, hubby is still wearing me down to get them NOW, so I may wind up caving to pressure sooner. LOL

Hubby is ok, should be back home shortly. He is active duty so had to report to base this morning to them be sent one.
Excited about the new breed of goose to add to the property.
I don't think Kane would adopt ducklings, but we are trying to convince him to move to the rear pasture for safety.
Tell hubby he needs a seperate brooder for the chicks, a grow out pen to get them out of the house and a coop for when they are grown. LoL, maybe that will put a hold on the eggs until he builds some of those.

Celtic, what quality is your appleyards? Are they from holderreads? Id like to add some next year (a pair at leased) , but I dont want to order ducklings. Would it be possible to get eggs from you? (next year though)

Fortunately or unfortunately.... depending on your point of view.... our property came all set up for poultry. It has 2 large coops, all sorts of nesting structures, and a few more farm/animal purpose structures that are easily converted for poultry.
The only thing that got his attention was having to make a separate predator safe fenced areas for them until they are cleared for free-ranging property in the daytime. We are both rather sick and tired of fencing projects.

so do i lock down?
or just keep going as ususal until he internally pips?

Baby #2 has hatched!
Baby #1 is trying to pick food off of it... and won't let it rest. It made me feel bad for baby #1... so I had to walk away from the bator for a little bit.
