Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Ok so here is the convo with my dad yesterday as we were clearing out brush in the chicken area...

Me: "Let me explain what I want to do.. the breeding pens will be here.. and the grow out pen will be here.."
Dad: "What's a grow out pen?"
Me: "Where I'll put the babies that will be.. ya know.. growing out."
Dad: "Ok, Listen.. chickens aren't that complicated. You put them in a pen, you feed them, they lay an egg and you eat it."
Me: "No dad. These are city chickens."
Dad: (sigh... eye roll)

There's the "old farmer" perspective for ya.

City chickens! Love it! Don't you know those city chickens are much more sophisticated?

Actually they are. Plus you've got to keep the darn city happy.

When I was a teenager, I lived in the suburbs. I found a couple roosters abandoned at a local park and took them home. Chaos ensued. Always been a pushover for critters in need.

Roosters ended up going to live with a friend's parents in a more rural area.

My dad's an old school farmer. Gotta love em. They are the BEST kinda men. BUT everything is also black and white.

I keep having this thought of him going to get some eggs to make breakfast and grabbing the cream legbar eggs. And me saying, "You ate the Cream Legbar eggs??? Those are expensive eggs!!" And him saying, "But they were this pretty blue color. I've never eaten a blue egg before."

That ends with me emailed a potential buyer and saying, "I'm sorry I will have to ship your eggs in a couple days. My dad made an omelet with them."

I would totally die! And thus is why I hide hatching eggs.

my husband said we are not I REPEAT NOT BUYING EGGS!!!
yesterday i got three THREEE EGGS YAY!!!!!!

We've been eggless since right before Christmas. I went and got local chicken eggs because we didn't have enough duck eggs for finishing out baking. Hubby looked at me like I murdered someone!

Now where to find outdoor Christmas lights in February? I'm ready to give the girls a little hint that their break time is over!

I'm going to separate everything out. The hubs is going to help me make breeding pens. If I end up getting 2 roos of the same breed I'll sell the extras. Yes, busy summer for sure. LOL. Plus we're going to try to sell our house in the early summer to get some acreage. I feel a little overwhelmed at times. But my parents have more than enough space for me. But it's what I love and the girls love it too.

We found a property that has a huge horse barn with about 30 individual stables in it. ;) I'm sure it won't be around by the time we sell our house. That's how it always goes for us.

Oh that happened to us. We had this beautiful farmhouse all picked out and someone snagged it right out from under us the day we closed on the sale of my condo.

Hon, I use any old light. Seriously. We've got the orange lights for working on cars, we've got grandmas old brass lamps wired fromt the ceiling of duck buildings, and one is actually got the base screwed to a pole! Any light will do. Just be sure they have 12 hours of light per day. I just leave mine on all night. It also keeps the building warm enough that when I go out to feed ducks, let them out, and get eggs about 7:30am, my eggs aren't frozen yet when its really cold.

Here are the chickens I picked up yesterday. A pair of Ameraucanas and a pair of Wheaten Marans.

They are still young yet 4-5 months old, but I was so excited to find an egg with the Ameraucanas this morning. It's such a beautiful blue egg and I'm gonna hatch any she lays in the next week since she was running with other roosters and the chicks would probably not be related to the blue roo I got since he's not even crowing.

Nice chickens!
