Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

I have never, ever put my address on a website. I don't like unannounced visitors, and I'm a single mother so I refuse to just put that information out there. Besides...I'd hate to waste ammo on some idiot that thought he could sneak up on me!

Morning all,

Still cute pictures, post more when you can!

Iain congrats on the buff spiders!

Julie, are turkeys smart enough to break a broody cycle?

Our new Buff SB Pom eggs are 5/5 growing shipped eggs. So excited to be adding these to the property.

Had an order placed yesterday for a holiday goose this year, plus a few rabbits and ducks too.

well it is with relief that i tell you guys that the handiquack duckling passed away sometime in the night .
i took him and his bowl out of the brooder when i got up and the other 2 went searching for their bowl.
they liked to sleep in it with him.

and the geese are quickly outgrowing being brooded on the porch.
another solution will have to be found this week,

CG, I'm sorry that your handiquacked bub didn't make it but I'm glad he passed without suffering any longer. That's a relief.

yes its a very big relief.
now i need these 2 rugrats to go to their new home before im even more attached to them .
they quack me up =)
i think they are even funnier than the geese but only bcuz they are tiny and pudgey. so everything they do is cute

My heart goes out to you... I have been following your posts and I know it had to be hard. I know I am in for a lot of the same with my first hatchings starting next week. But as I always tell my kids, I would much rather have and love these guys for whatever time we are given than to never have and love them at all!

Ah, I get what you mean about the space. I thought you meant the air cell - silly me. What you are seeing sounds totally normal. At 19-22 days you should still be seeing some space with only veins in it. The veins may look kinda irregular and thicker/chunkier in spots. The duckling will gradually fill up eveything except the air cell. Much closer to the hatch day you will just see a dark area (the duckling) and a light area (the air cell) and no other gap.

Thank you again. I feel much better... I thought that was what was going on but could not find any pictures or images of candled eggs showing that. We candeled again last night and started drawing the air sacks. One is pretty large so it was exciting to see and understand what is going on. How often do you check your air sacks?

I am stunned at I type this. I mentioned Egg #1 had zipped about 2/3 last night, then just stopped. I thought it was taking a nap and fully expected to see a baby when I got up this morning. But no. It got stuck with its beak sticking out of shell (he was zipping along bottom at that point so I could not see) and died. Had only 1" left to zip too. I mentioned eggs #2 & 4 were trying really hard with egg #1 to external pip, but no movement this morning. It looks like they could not get through the shell to external pip. Their beak are right at the pipping location. I checked egg #3 and confirmed it was backwards. Egg #6 was backwards too. Not sure about the other 3. Just pipped all the eggs and threw them back into bator. But I think they are all dead.
