Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

qj i think the rugrats layed with him lastnight and he was too weake to keep out from under them like he usualy does.

it was funny i took the bowl out to go dispose him him and they went looking for their bowl cryign for it. so when i put it back in they both quickly jumped back in it.

Awww. That's so sweet. Poor little guy.

I candled everyting but button quail and pheasents this morning, they are both just soooo dark. I've gotta get the black thing cocoa showed us, and try it.

6 goose eggs still happily baking (4 sebs, 1 reg. and 1 Giant Toulouse
7 of 12 shipped Silkies might be started, but it was hard to see any veins in them, I'm gonna checkk again on day 10 (its day 7) -tossed 5
2 of 7 Old English Game Bantem were viable -tossed 5
7 muscovys still doing great

(thats 2 sets of shipped wgg w/100% embryos going

)

Still no external pips from the giant pekings in lockdown. Overnight the humidity went down, but its back up again (70%) now. Looked like one had pipped internally last night, but I will wait until tonight when it full dark to check again. Hopefully one will have externally pipped by then, and some others will get a move on.

I don't want to interfere to soon, but with an internal pip, tonight I might just think about a tiny airhole. Hope the others are ok. I'm having to use my fan on the new hova to keep the heat up. The new one just doesn't hold heat that well. I hope the high humidity will offset the fan a bit.

Ok a few pictures before I head off to bed. I have Pekins, Runners and BEIs that are internally pipping tonight. I turned the fan off in my hovabator as I am going to use it as a hatcher now instead of the LG, which I think is demonized. Heres some pics of the new Breda, the Crelo, some Araucanas, the baby Pekins and a few of the babysitters, the Silkies

Here is Tut, the Breda

The Crelos

Love Tut!

Morning all,
Still cute pictures, post more when you can!
Iain congrats on the buff spiders!
Julie, are turkeys smart enough to break a broody cycle?
Our new Buff SB Pom eggs are 5/5 growing shipped eggs. So excited to be adding these to the property.
Had an order placed yesterday for a holiday goose this year, plus a few rabbits and ducks too.

I don't know, I need to do some research on broody turkeys. She was up this morning so she's apparently not all the way broody yet, I'll give her a few days befor anything to see what she does.

well it is with relief that i tell you guys that the handiquack duckling passed away sometime in the night .
i took him and his bowl out of the brooder when i got up and the other 2 went searching for their bowl.
they liked to sleep in it with him.

and the geese are quickly outgrowing being brooded on the porch.
another solution will have to be found this week,

They grow way too fast don't they? Mine are already losing their fuzz on their heads and won't look like goslings soon.

this is how they sleep at night and throughout the day .

I am stunned at I type this. I mentioned Egg #1 had zipped about 2/3 last night, then just stopped. I thought it was taking a nap and fully expected to see a baby when I got up this morning. But no. It got stuck with its beak sticking out of shell (he was zipping along bottom at that point so I could not see) and died. Had only 1" left to zip too. I mentioned eggs #2 & 4 were trying really hard with egg #1 to external pip, but no movement this morning. It looks like they could not get through the shell to external pip. Their beak are right at the pipping location. I checked egg #3 and confirmed it was backwards. Egg #6 was backwards too. Not sure about the other 3. Just pipped all the eggs and threw them back into bator. But I think they are all dead.

How sad. Sorry!

Aw, poor girl. If you can spare her a few eggs, why not let her sit them or finish them out? Can you just get some eggs from someone else, not to important, and let her have a go at it for you?

My Peking babies are consisitantly twice the size of my Khaki babies. But, it doesn't seem to give them a complex. In fact, I'd say the more friendly Pekings (but not too friendly) maybe keep the totally freakish by nature Khakis a bit calmer.

If she does go and stay broody I want to give her 1-2 of the eggs I have in the incubator. Problem is they've been cooking almost 2 weeks so she needs to hurry.

its better for him.

and the rugrats are suppose to hopefully go to their new home tomarrow.

So when are you filling the incubator back up?

Sorry Utah! I just thad the same thing with my marans, I had 4 start pipping a day early, and in the morning I was expecting to see their fluffy butts, but They hadn't so I pipped their air cell & 2 were still alive & 2 were not. It made feel
hit.gif
& these were my Marans, then I had a horrible mishap.

My Golden Reriever got in my brooding room, DON'T know how it happened, but she ate all my day old Marans. They were in with my Silkie, the silkie was fine, but there was nothing in there with my silkie. She was the only one in the house alone for like 10 minutes, when I came in from outside I saw her coming down the stairs.... Had a weird feeling so I rushed up stairs.... I could have beat her
he.gif
But it was not her fault it was mine. I now have latches on my lids so they just don't rest on top. A simple step I should have done from the start, but I overlooked. I mean they are raised from the ground & 2 feet more high on top of it. So she really had to "work" at it. All my other brooders were not touched so to speak being that they all had babies in it. This happpened 2 days ago.

So I am now ordering another 2 dozen, to get my blues.

I tell ya.... I'm shocked myself! I would be seriously bummed... BUT... I have a dozen very strong anconas on day 23 right now. And 4 of them look to internally pip tomorrow. I guess it will give me time to clean the other bator after the hatch of death before moving new eggs over on Sunday. And pidgey's egg is still alive, but still have my serious doubts.

Plus, I have a bunch of goosies doing great! However, I will be devastated if my toulouse babies on day 22 do not hatch!!

Aww. All your babies are so adorable! I don't know anything about Breda and Crelo chickens. Do you have a pic of what they look like as adults?
love.gif

My two week old pekins are almost 3 times as big as my week and a half old runners!
ep.gif

Here is a picture of hte Breda, full grown,
.

Here is the Crelo, full grown.

So I threw all the eggs out... getting ready to scour clean the bator before moving over the next set of eggs scheduled to hatch. I gave the eggs a close look and saw the following:

2 eggs: turned backwards
3 eggs: fully moved in air cell that tried so hard to external pip, but couldn't break shell
1 egg: internally pipped but not moved all the way up to external pip position
1 egg: never internally pipped

And 1 egg that zipped all but less than 1 inch... then died. I can live with the others dying, but this one really is screwing with my head.

WTH went wrong??!?!
he.gif

Jaz, omg how awful about your marans. So sorry!!

ETA: Oops... forgot to check my remaining pidgey egg.... wouldn't that be ironic if it is still alive.
