Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

well it is with relief that i tell you guys that the handiquack duckling passed away sometime in the night .
i took him and his bowl out of the brooder when i got up and the other 2 went searching for their bowl.
they liked to sleep in it with him.

and the geese are quickly outgrowing being brooded on the porch.
another solution will have to be found this week,

Sorry Utah! I just thad the same thing with my marans, I had 4 start pipping a day early, and in the morning I was expecting to see their fluffy butts, but They hadn't so I pipped their air cell & 2 were still alive & 2 were not. It made feel

& these were my Marans, then I had a horrible mishap.

My Golden Reriever got in my brooding room, DON'T know how it happened, but she ate all my day old Marans. They were in with my Silkie, the silkie was fine, but there was nothing in there with my silkie. She was the only one in the house alone for like 10 minutes, when I came in from outside I saw her coming down the stairs.... Had a weird feeling so I rushed up stairs.... I could have beat her

But it was not her fault it was mine. I now have latches on my lids so they just don't rest on top. A simple step I should have done from the start, but I overlooked. I mean they are raised from the ground & 2 feet more high on top of it. So she really had to "work" at it. All my other brooders were not touched so to speak being that they all had babies in it. This happpened 2 days ago.

So I am now ordering another 2 dozen, to get my blues.

Oh no, not the Marans!

Geez, may I please have a do-over for today??!?!?!

After waking up to dead babies, I run to town for a dr's appt. When I drove back up my street towards home, I see my horses running down street at me! So, I grabbed a bowl of treats... and like good children, they all ran up to me and followed me back to their pasture. I walk back inside, dispose of dead babies, wondering WTH would make my horses bust through the gate to run away.... when I see a brush fire creeping fast in my pasture!! Some freaking IDIOT neighbor grandpa told his grandkids to do a "controlled burn" of his pasture (next to mine) along MY fence line... in 30+ MPH winds going straight into my pasture!!

So just spent the last 1.5 hours dealing with fire department, cops, and stupid idiot neighbors.

UGH!!

There's just somethign weird in the air these days it seems like. My life has been nothing less than chaos and madness the past week. I was almost to work today when hubby called me to tell me the power was out at the house. On a sunny, calm spring day. For no apparent reason.

So I told him to go wrap up the incubators with blankets. With all my expensive eggs.

There's a bit of a story about the eggs themselves: I didn't realize one of my sellers had marked on the box for the post office to hold the package. So they held all of the eggs! I had to make a mad panic dash to the post office to get them. I was so afraid they'd be mushed or something but all were fine.

Anyhow, hubby rushes to get the gennie going and runs an extension cord up to the loft to plug in the incubators. But it won't work. Guess the gennie ran out of gas while he was inside attaching the extension cords. Right about then the power came back on. Ahh!

I'm happy its the weekend. I need a break.

Well, Uno is dead. the girls were freaking out becasue he wasn't in the brooder. Looks like he either got his neck broke by a dog, or from jumping and getting it bend behind him. I'm very bummed, he was getting so big.

I can't imagine the wee dog getting him, but its hard to say. He doesn't like mauled, just his neck back weird.

I'm so sorry.

oh quackers, today is one of those days you don't want to read each post.

little cayuga is losing the battle. I don't think it will make it.

Update: Celtic talked me through my pidgey egg in private and I pipped a big enough hole to get a good look inside. It had shrinkwrapped, but the inside was full of fluid. We opened up top half and found the beak. Baby is turned upside down. We got beak free and got baby back into bator. The breathing has improved greatly in the last 15 minutes. We are going back for round 2 of hatching it in a few minutes.

My inner duck said proceed at once, so I'm now (with Iain) in the middle of a full service hatch.

I'm so glad. only 3 babies are alive, out of the 6 eggs that made it to today. Two are now beak and some head out, one quacking a lot, one (w/yok) still chilled, but living. Number three is backwards or something. Not really any blood on him, even though I've removed 80% of his shell looking for a beak. I can only condlude it is at the other end somewhere, since all I found by the air sac is a foot. He is resting (or rather, I am) and soon I will continue w/ warm spray bottle of water, and moving quickly, dipping instruments into alcohol to keep things tidy. I know if I don't find his beek, he is lost.
