Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

OK... I seriously need help here!! It was bugging me about not hearing it click click, so I steamed up bathroom to take a peek. It has NOT internally pipped. It has moved so that the fluid has moved into aircell and I'm seeing the pulses from the duckling in the fluid.

My gut says to at least pip an external hole to see if fluid drains out.... I also see what appears to be the beak in the center on the top side of air cell, instead of on bottom. I can try to take pics if it help???

Anyone????

I say pip it, and try to drain. It will surely die otherwise. What have you got to lose?

Just candled the peking eggs, all but one are still. Are they sleeping, are they dead? who knows. The one appears to be more in the pip zone, and at least two other eggs have real angles shaping their air sacs. They aren't due until tomarrow.

I guess I will let them be another night, and tomarrow I will decide to pip for them or not in the morning. If I pip for them now, will they be ok if I keep the humidity above 70%?? I need these special Peking ducks.

Hi everyone! I have managed to drag myself away from the ducklings for a bit.

Here are the cuties today. I had to move them and the hen to the garage because we are supposed to have some bad weather and the poor chickens didn't like being left out of their tractor-coop and I was worried about the chickens eating the ducklings. I think I might have some blues in that group. They make the cutest chirping noises

well it is with relief that i tell you guys that the handiquack duckling passed away sometime in the night .
i took him and his bowl out of the brooder when i got up and the other 2 went searching for their bowl.
they liked to sleep in it with him.

and the geese are quickly outgrowing being brooded on the porch.
another solution will have to be found this week,

sorry for your loss, but i am glad he passed peacfully in the night!

this is how they sleep at night and throughout the day .

I am stunned at I type this. I mentioned Egg #1 had zipped about 2/3 last night, then just stopped. I thought it was taking a nap and fully expected to see a baby when I got up this morning. But no. It got stuck with its beak sticking out of shell (he was zipping along bottom at that point so I could not see) and died. Had only 1" left to zip too. I mentioned eggs #2 & 4 were trying really hard with egg #1 to external pip, but no movement this morning. It looks like they could not get through the shell to external pip. Their beak are right at the pipping location. I checked egg #3 and confirmed it was backwards. Egg #6 was backwards too. Not sure about the other 3. Just pipped all the eggs and threw them back into bator. But I think they are all dead.

hope pidgy egg has better luck!

Sorry Utah! I just thad the same thing with my marans, I had 4 start pipping a day early, and in the morning I was expecting to see their fluffy butts, but They hadn't so I pipped their air cell & 2 were still alive & 2 were not. It made feel
hit.gif
& these were my Marans, then I had a horrible mishap.

My Golden Reriever got in my brooding room, DON'T know how it happened, but she ate all my day old Marans. They were in with my Silkie, the silkie was fine, but there was nothing in there with my silkie. She was the only one in the house alone for like 10 minutes, when I came in from outside I saw her coming down the stairs.... Had a weird feeling so I rushed up stairs.... I could have beat her
he.gif
But it was not her fault it was mine. I now have latches on my lids so they just don't rest on top. A simple step I should have done from the start, but I overlooked. I mean they are raised from the ground & 2 feet more high on top of it. So she really had to "work" at it. All my other brooders were not touched so to speak being that they all had babies in it. This happpened 2 days ago.

So I am now ordering another 2 dozen, to get my blues.

Geez, may I please have a do-over for today??!?!?!

After waking up to dead babies, I run to town for a dr's appt. When I drove back up my street towards home, I see my horses running down street at me! So, I grabbed a bowl of treats... and like good children, they all ran up to me and followed me back to their pasture. I walk back inside, dispose of dead babies, wondering WTH would make my horses bust through the gate to run away.... when I see a brush fire creeping fast in my pasture!! Some freaking IDIOT neighbor grandpa told his grandkids to do a "controlled burn" of his pasture (next to mine) along MY fence line... in 30+ MPH winds going straight into my pasture!!

So just spent the last 1.5 hours dealing with fire department, cops, and stupid idiot neighbors.

UGH!!

jeez, i vote for you to be able to have a do over day!

Well, Uno is dead. the girls were freaking out becasue he wasn't in the brooder. Looks like he either got his neck broke by a dog, or from jumping and getting it bend behind him. I'm very bummed, he was getting so big.

I can't imagine the wee dog getting him, but its hard to say. He doesn't like mauled, just his neck back weird.

OH NO!

I'm so sorry

Update: Celtic talked me through my pidgey egg in private and I pipped a big enough hole to get a good look inside. It had shrinkwrapped, but the inside was full of fluid. We opened up top half and found the beak. Baby is turned upside down. We got beak free and got baby back into bator. The breathing has improved greatly in the last 15 minutes. We are going back for round 2 of hatching it in a few minutes.

I was just checking out the circumstances regarding Unos untimely demise. It would appear the 6 year old left the lid off (from turkey/quail tv) and Uno flipped up on top, and toppled over the edge of the next brooder over w/the chicks. He was kinda caught between the brooder and a chiropractic machine with his neck back. I'm not sure its broken, but I'm sure poor Uno is dead. This has not been a good spring for my eggs and babies. I figure in quail and turkey eggs alone, I've lost about $75.

Things better improve, or I'm just gonna go back to buying chicks or pairs, and incubating my own.

Tell me, everyone, is it me, or do our own fresh eggs really hatch better with less trouble than shipped eggs? I can' t remember ever having such a sucky hatch season, until we thought we'd buy some eggs to cool unusual breeds.
sad.png
If I can just get a stupid pair, it makes it all better. Its not like than many Kansas go for rare/unusual breeds, so I can just pop over a hundred miles and pick up adult breeders. I think the closest hatchery is a 6 hour drive. My only back up plan is to make my mom pick up babies for me for some weirdos when shes in Springfield, MO in 2 weeks. I'd rather my stupid eggs hatch, and nothing bad happen to anyone else (or myself) today.

Is it a full freaking moon or somethign??
All right, I've got the receipe. Give me 5 minutes to type it on the thread, and you'll be ready to go bake, cocoa!

The girls are out having a funeral for Uno right now. They've picked numerous daffodils and hyacinths for his poor grave. He's being buried at the edge of the duck pen, by the other turkeys. I'm not near as bummed as the little one, she's feels rather responsible.

It is a new moon today, but i thought i heard that is suppose to be good. or maybe it is just for setting and plants

Oh no, i hope she is ok

Round 2. The baby's head is free and he is moving it around slowly. His breathing got weak pretty quick, so we didn't get much else done before putting him bator into bator. We see a yolk sac, so not rushing into round 3 just yet.

Iain - I hope this one works out for you. I'm kind of in a similiar situation with one of my eggs. I've been debating all evening whether or not to do something. I didn't know if you could put a hole in an egg that hasn't internally pipped. It sounds like it's OK??? Not sure what I should do. This is one that had a funky air cell. I still see movement in the egg. Should I make a little hole? The other 3 eggs are peeping at me and this one still no pip!

I externally pipped the 2 eggs that have been internally pipped since Weds night. That's 48 hours (at least) and I was worried after what happened to yours. One of the shells especially was REALLY thick.

My inner duck said proceed at once, so I'm now (with Iain) in the middle of a full service hatch.

I'm so glad. only 3 babies are alive, out of the 6 eggs that made it to today. Two are now beak and some head out, one quacking a lot, one (w/yok) still chilled, but living. Number three is backwards or something. Not really any blood on him, even though I've removed 80% of his shell looking for a beak. I can only condlude it is at the other end somewhere, since all I found by the air sac is a foot. He is resting (or rather, I am) and soon I will continue w/ warm spray bottle of water, and moving quickly, dipping instruments into alcohol to keep things tidy. I know if I don't find his beek, he is lost.
