Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

I have 6 healthy little EE chicks. I eggtopsied the other 4. There were perfectly formed chicks but a lot of fluid so I'm guessing they quit just before lockdown. At least this has boosted my confidence in myself incubating. My broody and my incubator chicks hatched at the same time, 2 of the quitters were broody eggs and 3 were incubator eggs. Since mine and her hatch had about even results it makes me pretty sure this was the post office's fault and not my lack of incubation skills.
Sorry about your duckling DG. Looks like a ruptured yolk sac to me, which could be from helping him out too early or he could have kicked the wrong spot and did it his own I think. Either way, at least it's a learning experience and will help you improve future hatches. At least, that's what I tell myself on bad hatches.

Got most of my garden in this morning. Need to clean the coop today, it's a muddy mess and I need to baby proof it for the chicks when they come out.

Thanks everybody.....the vet just left. He couldn't suture the area, of course, but it's cut really, really deep. Bad thing is my horse did this 3 months ago in the same spot and I had finally got it healed up, but I didn't have the bleeding issue. Vet wrapped it tight, tight, tight...there was a vessel spurting blood once he got it cleaned up. Vet says he got down into the cartiladge and coronary band, and will probably develop arthritis in a couple of years. He's only 5 this spring! He took down the whole bottom rung of barbed wire, and there is a blood trail on it a good 15 feet long on it so he was hung up good.
I'm just very, very depressed. I hand raised this horse from the age of 6 weeks old, he was an orphan that almost died.

Just tossed all 13 of my local Cayuga eggs. Not one fertile in the bunch. I am destined to be Cayuga-less.

How horrible.

There seem to be a lot of problems with cayuga hatching. I wonder if they have fertility issues or something?
Maybe you should get some of chicksohmy's BEI and have mini cayugas? You could probably advertise them as "teacup" cayugas and make a fortune.

My goslings are starting to honk! I was outside in the garden and I heard a honk. I looked up expecting to see canada geese flying but nothing. Then I heard it again so I looked over at Elvis and he honked at me. Sounds kind of goofy, he hasn't quite got it right yet.

Dutch....

I feel for you and your baby!! I want to believe, after seeing my special child recover from some insanely horrendous injuries, that your boy will recover 100%!!! By the way..... please get rid of all barbed wire fencing. It is so extremely unsafe!!

Eyeheart, if I may again recommend Renee (ebay seller in Florida) for cayuga eggs. I am very impressed with how well her eggs were shipped and are developing. I did have one quit around day 9, but the remaining 5 are doing great on day 15. I also had a 75% hatch with sebrightmom's cayuga eggs.... so you can't go wrong with her either!

I dunno. I really want all purpose cayugas for eggs, meat and sale. If I hatched BEI's they would give less meat and I am guessing smaller eggs. I am skeptical with going through Renee, only because for the price, this will be my first hatch and would hope to be more experienced before forking out that kind of dough. Maybe I am being a cheap skate. I will look into sebrightmom's in the meantime or maybe I will just con Jaz into selling me a couple of her upcoming ducklings and then only hatch from my personal ducks when they mature. I dunno, we shall see.

That's awful!

That's awful too! Good grief. This thread is in a slump of sorts.

Awesome!

DG: Get a new hygrometer and I bet that fixes the problem.

Julie: I don't have the cahoonas to eggtopsy. My girly side comes out. I can't do it.

But if I could do it.. I would have looked into that one I just lost, that HAD to be from your drake. The egg was on the older side so I'm going to go with that.
