Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

I have one Cayuga egg on day 23. It looks alive, but has not started turning yet. That's it! Plan to take a break until my cayuga and Ancona pairs can give me eggs to swap with you for silver apple eggs. They are almost 4 months old, so hopefully only a couple more months?

How about you? Still hatching away?

I've got about 50 eggs in there. Duck and some chicken too. Darn it! I was gonna take a break too.
I separated out my ducks into breeding pens Mr. QJ helped me build, so I'm waiting patiently for an Apple egg. The drake's green head is coming in, and the girls are bobbin' their heads like crazy!

How old are they now? I was thinking I would need to separate in the next few weeks, just in case? Or is 4 months old way too early?

Butters in the hair dryer/ICU/mini brooder. I love the old Lyon bators! Lousy pic though.

Love Butters!

Dutch, love butters in the nicu!
Scored a deal this weekend.

Complete with all original paperwork, receipt from when bought, and maybe used once or twice if that. Got both the bator and hatcher for less than 1 cabinet bator.

About half way done with the Buff American hatch! Will be shipping part of them out this week. Still more Sebbies hatching. We have eggs set to hatch right into early June. 20 goslings growing out, and starting to see changes and making early selections to watch closer come September.
Three keepers so far:
Ripple - goose- grey dilute saddle, betting she will go splash
Jubilee - goose- splash super curly
Unnamed - gander - white with chest curls to spare
Growing out: blue, grey splits, buff, lilacs, possible lavender/lavender splash, saddlebacks, a few who need to feather to figure out color/pattern. Fun group for sure. (all Sebastopol)
Then we have hubbies buff dewlap Toulouse babies 1 gander 3 geese
Great find! I wish I could come across a cabinet bator around here.

My incubator is almost empty. Broody silkie has quite the stash under her though. They are staggered, she added a few more I didn't notice for a couple of days, but I'm not taking them until the others hatch. My brooder has a sizzle chick again though, 1 waiting for me to move it into the bator, and one zipping. 3 left to hatch then it will be unplugged and scrubbed.

Taking a break from hatching.
Almost empty bator? Turncoat!!!

I think Broody is in the air
th.gif
. I go outside to find the Mallard and the Call on ONE egg a piece.
I have ducks that keep trying to stay outside all night. I think they're trying to go broody. They've been holding their eggs and laying them in the treat dish or the corner of the run.

So when I got up this morning, I expected to find Butters upside down again....but NO! He was still upright! And had drank all his water and ate most of his food! He's also walking around well, though still needs more control. I just can't believe how well he's doing. Hopefully tomorrow and I can move him in with the other babies. I'm hoping it's a girl, though. I'd be tickled if all 3 were girls...I have 2 extra drakes, so more girls would be awesome.
Glad Butters is showing improvement.

Hello!! My goslings are hatching at Celtics! Will have them by this week I hope!! Right Celtic? :D

So whats up??
celebrate.gif

Long day here.

Congrats, DG!!! I too have goslings (buff dewlaps) hatching at Carole's place right now and hope to have them later this week!!

How's everything else going?

Sold another Ancona today for $12.50 and keep getting more bites. Now that Jaz said she wants the rest, people are contacting me.

Good thing she is worth more than any darn money!

Love that girl.
Awesome! I have that happen too. Only when I don't have ducklings do people want them.

I was going to quite after the white runners that come in the mail on Wednesday. But... it's looking like I'm going to do a large custom hatch of ducks and chickens and maybe some geese after that. Hooray!!!
celebrate.gif

It hatched this afternoon. I had to get creative. Time to replenish the ducky first aid kit. All I have left is vetwrap and sav-a-chick.

Fingers crossed. Little one is trying to get used to his/her shoe.

went and checked the chicken hen when i let everyone out.
3 itty bitty guinea keets and 1 ext pipped.
1 of the keets is pied.
which is a first for us.
we have had guineas for atleast 6 years.
introduced new blood about 5 yrs ago. and got lilac from the eggs as well as pearls.
we always get a few lavendars in each hatch but mostly pearls.
well this little baby is clearly pied!
=)
woot.gif

Thanks, Julie!

I tried to vent sex Barley, but she (I'm guessing) was struggling too much and I could not get her to relax enough to do it. I did, however, vent sex a grey dewlap that I thought was a boy and while nothing "popped out", it was not a cavity looking hole like Spirit girl, so I think I got it right. I will be taking Spirit back to dvm for follow up in a few weeks. I figured I'd haul all my dewlaps down with her and have dvm do it. That way, I'm not second guessing if I sexed them correctly.
thumbsup.gif

All my sizzle chicks just went to their new home. Happy they got a good home, but I need some for me, lol. She wants more too, but this next batch is for me! At least the non frizzled ones.

And it will be nice having a few days without babies in the house.

so the post office just told me i was outa luck on finding my package even tho it was priority mail

Hello all! Here is a run-down on what I have hatched. Kind of funny...got 5 silkies and 5 Calls. That must be my lucky number, lol.
Silkies:
1 splash
1 blue
3 buffs

Calls:
1 grey
1 blue fawn
3 butterscotch

Two of the butters are tiny, and I still have one with the egg attached to it's rear. It should have been totally out this morning. I think it was Bakin that mentioned how orderly my hatcher was? Well it isn't now...looks like something out of horror movie in there! LOL
yup it was me!

on the hatch!
Dutch, it is so worth it. But, I'm glad to be done hatching after this last cayuga egg on day 21 does its thing.

Time to start culling. My best friend's sis-in-law (who I love!) asked if she could have a cayuga drake to go with the two ancona ducks I gave my best friend a couple of months ago (and then she immediately stole them from my best friend). It makes me very happy to find the perfect home for my extra cayuga drake.

And I talked to the owner of my local feed store today. He is pretty sure he can find homes for some (if not all) of my excess ancona drakes. I also told him that if he knew someone who wanted pet barnyard toulouse and who would take excellent care of them, I would be willing to rehome them. He thinks he does. We'll see what happens.

The post office is on my SnIT LIST too. They took my ultra-treasured SILKIE DUCK eggs and stuffed them into the mailbox even though the box was literally covered in stickers that said "GLASS" and "PERISHABLE" all over it! I think I'm going to lodge a complaint.

Haha. My bator looked like the aftermath of a Grateful Dead concert the other morning.

very cool!
I don't check them until day 7. Everyone gets a chance.

It's probably bad practice, but I want to believe they're all viable. It's like the X-files... I WANT TO BELIEVE!

I've never seen a silkie chicken egg. They are bigger than the eggs in the birds nest by our back door (in my hanging basket, nonetheless).
Haha. Yes, I will take camera upstairs and snap the birthday crested whatever-it-is.
i do the same thing!
The brand new Crested Whatever It Is duckling:

The Not Crested Whatever It Is duckling:

The crested is probably a swedish, the other one has brownish patches, but doesn't walk like a runner. Feed store said the box was marked "mixed ducks" when it arrived.
very cute the crested one looks alot like my Captain as a baby
love.gif

Hi guy's it has been awhile since I could get back.
I got my NPIP certification paper work today!!!!!! Ya, I now legal in MN to sell hatching eggs and chicks! I hatched out a crested or tufted Rouen out of my Blue (Bob) drake and I just noticed that I have a semi crested female. Her crest isn't real good but the baby has a great one. Will try and get a picture sometime today. I have been trying to see everone's breeding pens but it seems like no one show's them. Is there a page that would show them for ducks and chickens?
woot.gif

I'm having a weird, odd, frustrating, lousy day so far.
he.gif

We had someone show up to look at the car I have for sale. They were all interested and made an offer but said they had to run up to the bank to get the rest of the money. Oh, but wait, our truck is stuck in the ditch, can you pull us out?

So hubby rescued them. They never came back for the car. And I thought they were totally serious, they had a car trailer on their truck and everything.

In the meantime, the one duck customer who didn't back out was already several hours late. We get idiots pulled out of the ditch, I wrote up a bill of sale and got all the documents ready to sign off on the car and the duck buyers show up. So we go upstairs and the ducklings have practically drowned themselves in their water. They spilled so much out of the waterer that they're soaked and standing in half an inch of water (why the pellets didn't soak it up, I'll never know).

So now I'm holding a half-dead duckling, trying to warm the silly thing, and trying to explain to the buyers how to tell a good runner from a pet quality runner.
ep.gif

So, had every buyer I talked to come through, I'd have $3060 in my pocket. I have $18.
barnie.gif

I don't know if I want to scream or cry.
hugs.gif

hello all!

Went to the 2 poultry auctions today & I came home with just an 18 pack of fertile chicken hatching eggs for $1.50
Haven't decided if I will hatch or have an omelette
droolin.gif
droolin.gif
that would be one big A$% Omelette
I had a very nice and productive day today and I even got my dewlap babies outside for their first adventure. Spirit trucked around well on the uneven ground, but I don't think she can tug on the blades of grass like the others. So, after a short cruise around to check things out, she decided she'd rather lay in my lap and watch the others.

love.gif

I think the ducklings are all dead because of the 105 degree night accident :( The pipped one has not moved in two days and is shrink wrapped and the others show no signs of life :(
hugs.gif

Oh, I just hate it when that happens!!! I hatch a lot, but just 6 weeks ago I cooked my full bator of muscoveys and turkeys. I was completely bummed. I'd hatched 2 pheasents the night before, but everything else (due w/i 3 days) was dead. It made me feel like giving up, but since then I've had a great Khaki hatch, a pretty good goose hatch (7 of 11), and a smattering of other things from a handfull of eggs. If your using an LG, which seem prone to these problems, go read the LG hints and tips thread, but its info is very useful for dealing with spikes. I myself have added in a couple of long ballons full of water to keep temps even, and its been perfect ever since. Please don't give up! Every experience makes you better, but they don't always feel very good (but others feel AWESOME).

GoingQuackers - Sorry about the low dough day. Better luck tomarrow!
i will have to try the ballon idea for my next hatch
Well....I got some shocking/exciting news tonight. I'm going to be a grandmother

I told her she wasn't supposed to do that until I was at least 45...she's gonna be a couple years early! I'm totally beside myself......

i sold 3 ducklings today $10 each. i also bought 6 welsh harlequin hatching eggs to put under my broody hen kira. apparently muscovies are very broody. keiko is on her second clutch of the year.

so cute!
love.gif

She may be wanting to go broody....all of mine that have been laying are. Seems like they know it's close to the end of the season and they all want to brood now.

I woke up to a suprise....the iffy butterscotch baby has improved! It had never opened it's eyes, and couldn't hold it's head up. And it just wanted to lie on it's side because it couldn't stay up. I did a little physical therapy last night to encourage it to stretch it's neck up and out. This morning, I expected to find it dead....but nope! It's eyes are open, and it's holding it's head up. It's always been strong and active, but just kept throwing itself forward and onto it's side. It still has that launching affect, but it's acting like a duck now and acting more normal....trying to preen and interacts. I just can't get it to stay up right because of the launching affect. Can't keep it in a bowl cuz it launches itself out of the bowl. Oh hey! As I'm sitting here typing this, it has righted itself! Maybe it will pull through! It definitely has the desire to! It's name is Butters, lol.

Excellent news, Dutch!

My african flock have decided they want the goslings in the garage, but the goslings are terrified of the flock. I have tried opening garage door and walling off sides so the babies can retreat to back of pens if they want, but my older set of babies are so scared, they keep trying to claw their way into the youngest set's pen (the youngest set are good with chilling in back of pen). So I finally gave up and closed the door again and now the africans are refusing to leave. I want to turn the older set out into side yard, but I have to figure out a way to get them past the africans.

so, what doesn everyone have in the bator and under the hens?

I have turkeys and sebbies in the bator, but of the two sebs that spidered, only one is left.
i am empty at the moment, i am having an inner struggle weather to fire up my bator and thow in the dozen of my own barnyard mix or to wait and just eat them
gig.gif
idunno.gif

If you buy so many fish, how did you manage two empty tanks??? I know you don't eat them.

Funny: I had a friend that had a huge tank full of guppies, and a zillion babies. I used to tease him that I was going to cook with them sometime. (I never did, btw) but once, I made some vanilla ice cream, and I put in grape nuts (for brown bread icecream) but told him, after he'd eaton it, that I'd ran some baby guppies through the blender and made him guppy ice cream. (the brown bread ice cream totally has the right look). I dont think he ate ice cream for the two monthes it took me to quite laughing at his response, and tell him the truth. I've seriously got tears rolling down my eyes just remembering. Lets just say it was only funny for me.

(these aren't looking too good, I only see two moving)

5/28:
Silkie (2)

5/31
Trout Runner
Silver Appleyard
Indian Runner
Silkie (1)

Set yesterday:
Silkie (10)
Lavender Bantam Ameraucana chicken (4)

Arriving next week:
White Runner

Will be setting one last batch of our ducks eggs at the same time I set the white runners.

Had something funny-ish happen tonight. I was going upstairs to water the 'lings one more time before bed. As I come up the stairs I hear all this peeping, I look through the door to see one of my 3 day old ducklings running around my floor. It escaped the baby brooder, jumped off the table and was running around the floor crying for its friends!

Your ordering more dewlaps? Wow, how many will that make you?

I thouoght of you an hour ago, when we had the baby dewlpas and luna out in the baby pen. Since I was out keeping an eye, since the top is open, I let out the Sebbies too munch on some taller grass at the same time. They found the babies, and never left the pen.

We put up a temp pen around one of the girls teepees, built out of the wood that falls from the ginormous ancient old mulberry in the background. Hubbie has decided since the geese mow so well, to stop mowing (mower also in background) and put up a fence accross whole back acre, so they can just all have at in turn. One day sebbs will get gardenw ith pool, and the dewlaps the larger grass paddock, and then switch. Each has grass, just one is smaller with a pool also. Now all will have equal opportunity for everyone I guess. It won't be long till the babies are big enough to spend more time outside. Everyone still goes inside at night.

i am in the process of moving my ducklings again, the little buggers have eaten everything in my garden but the garlic and the peppers (protected in the hot house)
